‘No Kid Sleeps on the Floor’ Oak Forest Non-Profit Nears Milestone 1,000th Bed for Local Children

MIDLOTHIAN, IL — In a world where many take a warm, safe bed for granted, the volunteers of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) are working tirelessly to remind the community that for some local children, a bed is a luxury they simply do not have.

The Oak Forest chapter of the national non-profit is currently celebrating a major milestone: since its founding in 2018, the group is set to build and deliver its 1,000th bed this year.

Building Hope in a Parking Lot

On a recent Saturday morning, the sounds of saws and drills filled a church parking lot in Midlothian. Dozens of volunteers gathered for what the group calls a “build-out”—a high-energy event where raw lumber is transformed into sturdy bunk beds and single frames.

“We literally build and deliver beds for children in need,” said Dave King, president of the SHP Oak Forest Chapter. “We serve victims of fire, flooding, domestic abuse, relocation, and financial struggles. There are so many reasons that can lead to the need for a bed, but every child deserves a bed of their own.”

A Community-Powered Mission

What makes the organization unique is that it provides a complete sleeping solution. When a bed is delivered, it isn’t just the wooden frame—volunteers also provide:

  • Brand-new mattresses
  • New pillows
  • Fresh sheets
  • Handmade comforters or quilts

For volunteers like Dolly Cooper, the experience is as rewarding for the builders as it is for the children. “This is a service that is priceless,” Cooper said while working at the Midlothian build. “This is something that you can’t put money on. And it feels good to be part of it.”

The Goal: Ending “Child Bedlessness”

The need in the South Suburbs remains high. The organization prioritizes emergencies, such as families who have lost everything in house fires or those fleeing domestic violence.

“We continue to do it because we want to make sure that no kids sleep on the floor in our town,” King said. “We have an amazing team of volunteers, and together we’re making a difference, one bed and one child at a time.”

How You Can Help

The Oak Forest chapter is always looking for helping hands and donations. No building experience is required to volunteer; training is provided on-site during build days.

  • Volunteer: Sign up for upcoming build days at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church or other local sites.
  • Donate: New twin-sized bedding (sheets, comforters, pillows) is always in high demand.
  • Apply: If you know a family in need, applications for beds can be submitted directly through the SHP website.

What do you think, South Suburbs? Did you know so many of our neighbors were struggling with “bedlessness”? Have you ever volunteered for a build-out?
