CANOGA PARK, CA – A celebratory night turned into a tragedy in Canoga Park on Saturday when Los Angeles Police Department officers shot and killed a resident’s dog while responding to a noise complaint.

The Initial Response

Officers dispatched to an apartment complex on the 7500 block of Jordan Avenue around 9:00 p.m. following multiple reports from neighbors about a woman screaming loudly from inside a unit.

Upon arrival, LAPD officers discovered that the woman was not in any immediate danger. According to officials, she was celebrating the New York Knicks defeating the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 to capture their first NBA championship title in 53 years.

The Shooting Incident

The situation quickly escalated when officers interacted with the resident. Police reports state that the woman failed to secure her dog inside the apartment, and the animal subsequently charged at one of the officers on the scene.

In response to the perceived threat, an officer fired their weapon, fatally striking the dog.

Investigation and Follow-Up

The LAPD has confirmed that a full investigation into the officer-involved shooting is underway. Department officials stated that additional details regarding the incident, body-worn camera footage protocols, and the official report will be released on Monday.
