Bay Area Wildlife Rescuers See Massive Surge In Orphaned Baby Animals

WALNUT CREEK, CA – Spring has arrived in the Bay Area, and with it, a massive influx of baby wildlife in need of rescue. Staff at the Lindsay Wildlife Experience in Contra Costa County are working around the clock as the center enters its busiest season of the year.

The Annual Baby Boom

Dozens of young animals are being dropped off daily at the Walnut Creek facility. While baby birds falling from nests make up a large portion of the arrivals, the center is also seeing a high number of orphaned squirrels, possums, and skunks.

“Our hope is we can treat them, rehabilitate them and return them to the wild,” said Jesse Menne, a Lindsay Wildlife vet technician. The facility’s primary mission is to ensure these animals stay nourished and safe until they are strong enough to survive on their own.

How Residents Can Help

Wildlife experts are asking local homeowners to make small changes to help protect these vulnerable animals during nesting season:

  • Delay Tree Trimming: Avoid pruning or trimming trees until the fall. Most birds and squirrels are currently nesting, and trimming can destroy their homes.
  • Check Before Mowing: Keep an eye out for ground nests or small mammals in tall grass.
  • Safe Rescue: If you find an animal in distress, place it in a cardboard box or bag and keep it in a dark, quiet place.

Contacting Rescue Services

If you encounter a baby animal that appears injured or truly orphaned, officials recommend contacting a local animal rescue center immediately. Getting the animal into the hands of professionals like those at Lindsay Wildlife increases their chances of a successful return to the wild.
