10-Year Veteran Officer Killed, Second Officer Critical After Hospital Shooting

CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago Police Department is reeling after a devastating security breach at a Lincoln Square hospital led to the death of one officer and left another fighting for his life on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital around 10:50 a.m. local time on April 25. What began as a routine transport for a suspect in custody ended in a “nightmare scenario” that has left the city’s law enforcement community in shock.

Ambushed During Transport

Two officers from the 17th (Albany Park) District were at the hospital escorting a suspect who had been arrested earlier for an alleged robbery. The suspect was being held for medical observation following an unrelated incident.

According to CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling, the suspect managed to gain possession of a weapon while inside the hospital and opened fire on the officers.

  • The Fallen Hero: A 38-year-old officer, a 10-year veteran of the force, was fatally struck. He was pronounced dead shortly after being transferred to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
  • The Injured Officer: A 57-year-old officer, a 21-year-old veteran of the department, remains in critical condition.

SWAT Standoff Ends in Capture

Immediately following the shooting, the suspect fled the hospital on foot, sparking a massive manhunt in the surrounding neighborhood. SWAT teams eventually surrounded a residence several blocks away from the hospital. After a tense standoff, the suspect was taken back into custody without further injury to the public.

Hospital Security Under Scrutiny

Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital released a statement confirming that the suspect had been “wanded” upon arrival in accordance with weapon detection protocols and was escorted by police at all times.

While no hospital staff or patients were harmed, the incident raises terrifying questions about how a suspect in custody obtained a firearm inside a secured medical facility. Police confirmed they recovered a third gun at the scene, but the origin of that weapon remains under investigation by the CPD’s Investigative Response Team.

A City in Prayer

Tributes have poured in from across the state. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed the state’s grief on social media, stating, “Illinois mourns the loss of an officer… May we come together to pray for the critically injured officer’s recovery.”

Superintendent Snelling echoed the sentiment in a department-wide message, praising the officers for their dedication and calling the loss “unfathomable.”

Community Voice: How Can We Make Our Hospitals Safer?

This tragedy has left the Albany Park and Lincoln Square communities shaken. Residents are now questioning the safety protocols used when suspects are brought into public medical spaces.
