Chicago, Illinois — A horrifying tragedy unfolded on Chicago’s South Side after a mother was accused of fatally stabbing her infant daughter before allegedly jumping from a second-floor window, according to police.
Infant Found Fatally Injured Inside Chicago Home
The shocking incident happened on the morning of May 15 in the 3000 block of West 59th Street in Chicago’s 8th District. Authorities said officers responded to the scene around 8:45 a.m. after reports of a violent incident involving an infant.
Police allege that Tatiana Maxwell, 25, stabbed her infant daughter inside a residence, leading to the child suffering critical injuries. Emergency responders rushed to the scene as chaos unfolded both inside and outside the home.
The infant was later identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Nyhnia Stovall.
Witness Describes Chaotic Scene
Neighbors and witnesses described a disturbing and emotional scene as emergency crews arrived.
“I didn’t see it [the baby] bleeding, but it looked limp and after that, they put two kids in the squad car… they took off and then, at that point, more squad cars came and two ambulances,” one witness told Fox 32 Chicago.
The witness also described seeing the suspect fall from above moments later.
“Then I saw the lady hit the ground. I didn’t see where she jumped from, but I did see her hit the ground and then fall on her side.”
The terrifying sequence of events left nearby residents shaken as police secured the area and began investigating the scene.
Infant Dies Despite Lifesaving Efforts
Authorities said the baby was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital with a puncture wound to the chest. Despite emergency medical efforts, the infant was later pronounced dead.

Chicago police confirmed that Maxwell has now been charged with multiple serious offenses, including:
- One felony count of first-degree murder
- One felony count of murder with a strong probability of death or injury
Authorities also stated that a knife was recovered from the scene, which investigators believe may be connected to the attack.
