Florida Parents Panic After Guns Found at Two High Schools Within Hours of Each Other

Sanford, Florida — Fear and panic spread across Seminole County on Thursday after two separate firearm incidents at local high schools triggered lockdowns and led to student arrests, leaving parents and students shaken.

School officials later admitted that “safety was compromised” during the alarming incidents at Seminole High School and Lyman High School.

Gun Found at Seminole High School

The first incident unfolded at Seminole High School’s Ninth Grade Center, where administrators reportedly received a tip about a possible weapon on campus.

Authorities responded immediately, with investigators and sheriff’s deputies quickly locating the student identified in the report. Officials later confirmed that a firearm was recovered from the student’s bag.

The student, identified as a 17-year-old boy, was taken into custody following the discovery.

According to authorities, the teen now faces multiple charges, including:

  • Possession of a firearm under the age of 18
  • Disruption of school function
  • Possession of a firearm on a school campus

He was later transported to the Seminole County Juvenile Assessment Center.

School officials praised the individual who reported the tip, emphasizing that quick action may have prevented a potentially dangerous situation from escalating further.

Increased Security Measures Announced

Following the lockdown, Seminole High School administrators informed families that there would be a stronger law enforcement presence on campus moving forward.

Officials said students and parents should expect to see additional deputies and weapon-detection K9 units on campus Friday as a precautionary measure.

The district stressed that maintaining student safety remains the top priority, especially as concerns continue to grow nationwide over weapons being brought into schools.

Separate Incident at Lyman High School

In a second and unrelated incident, administrators at Lyman High School also received information about a student allegedly carrying a weapon on campus.

Authorities searched the student and reportedly found a firearm before taking the individual into custody.

Unlike the Seminole High case, officials have not yet released the identity of the Lyman student or confirmed what charges, if any, may be filed.

The back-to-back incidents heightened concerns among families throughout the district, especially because both occurred on the same day.

Superintendent Calls Incidents “Dangerous” and “Unacceptable”

Seminole County Public Schools Superintendent Serita D. Beamon addressed the incidents in a statement released Thursday evening.

She described the situations as “dangerous” and “unacceptable,” urging parents to play a more active role in monitoring what students bring onto school campuses.

Beamon also reminded gun owners to properly secure firearms at home to prevent minors from gaining access to them.

In her statement, she thanked law enforcement officers for their rapid response and called on the community to work together to keep schools safe during the final stretch of the school year.

Parents Describe Emotional Lockdown Experience

For many parents, the uncertainty during the lockdowns created moments of intense fear and helplessness.

“Can you imagine as a parent what I’m going through right now — it’s terrible,” parent Debarati Chakrabarty said during the lockdown at Seminole High School.

Chakrabarty explained that her son was taking an important exam at the time and did not have access to his phone, leaving her unable to contact him while police searched the campus.

“I was almost in tears. I was breaking down — forty worst minutes of my life,” Chakrabarty said.

The emotional reactions from parents reflect growing anxieties over school safety incidents happening across the country.
