Intense Tornadoes And Giant Hail Threaten Plains And Midwest

TOPEKA, KS – A multi-state severe weather outbreak is targeting the nation’s heartland, bringing a dangerous threat of strong-to-intense tornadoes (EF2+), destructive winds, and widespread baseball-sized hail across the central Plains and Midwest.

High-Risk Zones Named

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a Level 4 out of 5 Moderate Risk for severe thunderstorms, with the bullseye centered over northeast Kansas and southeast Nebraska. Cities within the high-alert corridor include:

  • Topeka and Wichita, Kansas
  • Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska
  • Des Moines, Iowa
  • Kansas City, Missouri

Meteorologists warn that atmospheric instability (high CAPE) combined with intense wind shear has created a highly volatile environment capable of producing discrete, rotating supercells.

Severe Hazards Expected

The primary concerns for residents in the affected regions through Monday night include:

  • Intense Tornadoes: Potential for long-track tornadoes rated EF2, EF3, or stronger.
  • Giant Hail: Reports of hail reaching baseball to softball size (up to 4 inches in diameter).
  • Damaging Winds: Wind gusts exceeding 75 mph, capable of knocking down trees and cutting power.
  • Flash Flooding: Torrential downpours stalling over local neighborhoods.

The Threat Shifts Tuesday

While the peak of the outbreak is expected Monday evening, the storm system will move east on Tuesday. Severe thunderstorms remain possible from the Southern Plains up into the Great Lakes region, though the overall tornado threat is expected to be lower compared to Monday’s volatile setup.

Local emergency management officials are urging residents to review their severe weather safety plans immediately, identify their sturdy shelter locations, and keep a reliable way to receive weather alerts overnight.
