Washington, D.C. — A late-night act of vandalism at one of Washington’s most recognizable bakeries has led to the arrest of a Maryland man accused of hurling a beer keg through the front window of the famous Georgetown Cupcake shop.
The shocking attack happened Sunday night at the bakery located near the intersection of M and 33rd Streets, leaving shattered glass across the storefront and a worker inside deeply shaken.
Police Arrest Maryland Man in Bakery Attack
Authorities identified the suspect as 28-year-old Charles Joseph Ali of Rockville, Maryland. Police say he now faces a felony destruction of property charge after allegedly throwing a metal beer keg directly through the bakery’s front window.
Investigators also suspect Ali may be connected to another vandalism case involving a nearby business in April, though no charges have been filed in that incident so far.
The violent act quickly drew attention because Georgetown Cupcake is not just a local bakery — it gained national fame after being featured on Discovery’s hit reality series “DC Cupcakes.”
The shop became widely known for its long customer lines stretching down the block and for the story behind its founders, sisters Sophie LaMontagne and Katherine Berman, who left careers in finance and fashion to build the bakery brand.
Employee Left Terrified During Late-Night Incident
According to bakery owner Katherine Berman, a lone female employee was inside the shop when the frightening attack unfolded around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.
After seeing the suspect outside, the employee reportedly ran toward the back of the bakery in fear for her safety.
“She was absolutely terrified,” Berman said. “She still is. She is really shaken by this. It causes a lot of psychological damage to you.”
Surveillance footage later showed the suspect leaving the scene after smashing the window with the keg.
Berman said the employee feared the situation could have escalated further, especially given the suspect’s aggressive behavior leading up to the attack.
Surveillance Video Captured Disturbing Moments
According to Berman, surveillance cameras from neighboring businesses helped piece together what happened before the attack.
She said the suspect initially attempted to rip a metal trash can from the curb but failed. Moments later, he allegedly returned carrying a beer keg that had been sitting outside a nearby home.
The suspect then allegedly hurled the keg through the bakery window, causing major damage to the storefront.
“He’s violent, and I think that, to be honest with you, in our society, we live in a civil society where there’s an expectation for us to respect each other, our property, and clearly he didn’t do any of those things,” Berman said.
Bakery Reopened Within Hours
Despite the damage, Georgetown Cupcake reopened only hours after the attack, covering the shattered storefront with plywood while continuing business operations.
Following the arrest announcement, the bakery owners released a short statement reassuring customers that the incident would not stop them from moving forward.
“Our shop is open,” they said in a joint statement Thursday. “We will keep doing what we have always done.”

Their response drew praise online from supporters who applauded the business for remaining resilient after the frightening ordeal.
Investigation Continues
While the suspect has been formally charged in connection with the bakery attack, authorities say investigations into the additional vandalism incident are still ongoing.
The case has sparked conversations online about public safety, rising acts of vandalism, and the emotional impact such incidents can have on workers caught in dangerous situations.
For the Georgetown Cupcake staff, the shattered glass can be replaced — but the emotional trauma experienced by the employee inside may take much longer to heal.
