Oak Island, North Carolina — A frightening afternoon on the water turned into a dramatic rescue operation after a boat carrying four people and their dog capsized near Oak Island, North Carolina.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene Monday afternoon after receiving reports of the overturned vessel near the Lockwoods Folly Inlet, an area known for rough and unpredictable waters.
Boat Capsizes Near Oak Island
According to town officials, the incident happened at approximately 2:06 p.m. local time on May 18. Authorities identified the vessel as a 19-foot Carolina Skiff that overturned near the inlet.
The sudden capsizing left multiple passengers in the water and triggered an immediate emergency response involving several rescue agencies.
Officials said the dangerous situation could have ended much worse if not for the quick actions of nearby responders and a civilian boater who stepped in to help.
Bystander and Rescue Crews Jump Into Action
Oak Island officials confirmed that both emergency personnel and a nearby bystander played critical roles in saving the victims.
The town stated that the Oak Island Mobile Drone Control Unit assisted in locating and rescuing two people from the water, while the remaining two passengers and the dog were helped by a civilian on a nearby boat.
The coordinated rescue effort ensured that everyone onboard was brought safely back to shore.
Authorities have not released the identities of the individuals involved, but officials confirmed that all four people and the dog survived the frightening ordeal.
Boat Became Stuck on Sandbar
During the incident, the overturned vessel reportedly became stuck on a sandbar near the inlet before crews were eventually able to remove it from the area.
Officials have not yet determined exactly what caused the boat to capsize. Investigators may continue examining weather conditions, water movement and other possible contributing factors.
Despite the dramatic nature of the incident, authorities said the passengers escaped with only minor injuries.
Brunswick County EMS evaluated the boaters for “minor, non-life-threatening injuries,” according to the statement released by Oak Island officials.
Multiple Agencies Assisted in Rescue
The rescue operation involved several agencies working together in what officials described as a unified emergency response.
“The Town of Oak Island and the Fire Department sincerely thank all of the mutual aid partners for the unified effort in this response, which included Oak Island Water Rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard Station Oak Island, Tri-Beach Volunteer Fire Department, Brunswick County EMS, and the Oak Island Police Department,” the statement from town officials read.
The successful rescue highlighted the importance of coordination between local emergency teams and nearby civilians during water emergencies.

Officials Remind Boaters About Water Safety
Following the incident, town officials also used the opportunity to stress the importance of boating safety, especially when traveling through rough waterways and inlets.
“A reminder on the importance of having U.S.C.G. approved life jackets and floatation devices for all passengers and crew on board, and in a readily accessible area; or better, actively worn when traversing rough waters such as an inlet,” officials stated.
Safety experts often warn that inlets can quickly become dangerous because of strong currents, changing tides and unstable wave conditions.
Fortunately, this incident ended with everyone surviving, including the family’s dog, after what could have easily become a tragedy off the North Carolina coast.
