Florida — A Florida construction worker is being praised for an extraordinary act of honesty after returning $30,000 in cash he discovered abandoned inside a Wawa restroom to the rightful owner, who had desperately gathered the money to help his sister pay for a medical procedure.

Construction Worker Discovers Bag Filled With Cash
According to reports, Luis Salazar found a black fanny pack stuffed with cash while inside a Wawa bathroom on May 3.
The bag reportedly contained money in various denominations, from single-dollar bills to $100 notes, totaling more than $30,000.
Despite the enormous amount of cash sitting unattended, Salazar said he never considered keeping it for himself.
Instead, the construction worker immediately began trying to figure out who the owner might be.
The problem, however, was that the bag contained almost no identifying information, leaving Salazar with little more than a vague memory of what the person looked like.
Owner Realized Money Was Missing Miles Away
Meanwhile, the owner of the money reportedly didn’t notice the loss until he had already traveled into another county.
The 24-year-old man later described the terrifying moment he realized the cash had vanished.
“I was like, ‘Oh my God, my freaking money’s gone. I’m out of all this bread. I don’t know what I’m going to do,’” he told WPBF.
According to reports, the money was especially important because it came from the sale of his cherished childhood Pokémon collection.
The unidentified man told The Washington Post he had sold the collection for $30,023 in cash to help pay for his younger sister’s medical procedure.
Only hours after completing the sale, the money had disappeared.
Good Samaritan Refused to Keep the Money
Rather than turning away from the situation, Salazar reportedly spent several days attempting to track down the owner.
Eventually, the desperate brother contacted local authorities about the missing cash. By May 7, the two men were finally reunited at a police station.
Salazar said the emotional encounter quickly became overwhelming.
According to him, the younger man immediately burst into tears and hugged him after discovering that every dollar was still inside the fanny pack.
The construction worker later explained why returning the money felt like the only choice.
“$30,000 is great, but it’s not mine to keep. I like to earn my money,” Salazar said.

The owner reportedly offered to take Salazar out to dinner as a thank-you gesture, but the humble worker politely declined the offer.

“I just did the right thing. I don’t need to be put on a pedestal,” he insisted.
According to the owner, the recovered money was handed over to his sister only a few days later so she could proceed with her medical treatment.
He did not publicly reveal details about the procedure or her condition.
