Plainfield Township, Illinois — Authorities in Illinois say a potential school tragedy may have been prevented after a relative intervened and stopped a teenage boy allegedly heading to carry out a shooting at an elementary school on the final day of classes.
The frightening incident unfolded Friday afternoon in Plainfield Township, southwest of Chicago, prompting a major law enforcement response and heightened security measures across local schools.
Relative Allegedly Stopped Teen Before Attack
According to the Will County Sheriff’s Department (WCSD), deputies responded to a call around 12:50 p.m. on May 22 involving what was initially described as a “male suicidal subject.”
When officers arrived, they encountered a juvenile male and a relative who had already physically restrained him.
“Further investigation shows the relative had discovered the juvenile was armed with a firearm and the relative dialed 911 while pinning the juvenile down,” WCSD said in a statement.
Authorities later determined the teen was allegedly planning an attack targeting Grand Prairie Elementary School in Joliet.
Investigators believe the family member’s immediate actions may have prevented a devastating incident from taking place.
Weapons and Ammunition Recovered
Police said deputies recovered a Glock handgun along with multiple concerning items found inside the teenager’s backpack.
According to authorities, officers confiscated several loaded magazines, knives, gloves, an accelerant and additional weapons-related materials during the investigation.
The sheriff’s office stated that preliminary findings suggest the boy had allegedly been “on his way to conduct a school shooting” before he was stopped.
The discovery triggered immediate safety precautions across the area as investigators worked to determine the extent of the alleged plan.
Teen Taken to Hospital After Alleged Statements
Following the incident, the teen was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation.
Authorities said the juvenile allegedly made “suicidal and homicidal statements to EMS on scene,” prompting concerns about both public safety and his mental state.
Officials confirmed the teenager remains in police custody while the investigation continues.
As of now, no formal charges have been filed.
School District Responds to Threat
The Plainfield Community Consolidated School District later confirmed the teenager involved was a freshman at Plainfield High School-Central Campus.
The district stated the student had not attended school since December and had a “documented history of poor attendance.”
School officials emphasized there was no immediate danger to students because the incident happened after schools had already dismissed early for the final day of classes.
“There was no active threat to students or staff because the incident occurred after students were dismissed due to early release,” the district said.
Even so, administrators implemented emergency safety procedures for remaining staff members.
“Staff who were in buildings after the incident occurred were placed in lockdown, outdoor activities were moved inside, and an increased police presence was established at school facilities for the remainder of the day.”

Investigation Remains Ongoing
The Will County Sheriff’s Department says investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged plot.
Authorities have not released the teen’s identity due to his age and noted that additional information could emerge as the case develops.
WCSD stressed that there is currently “no threat to the community” but described the investigation as active and ongoing.
The disturbing incident has once again raised concerns about school safety, mental health warning signs and the importance of quick intervention by family members and law enforcement.
