Louisville, Kentucky — A disturbing domestic violence case in Kentucky has led to multiple felony charges after authorities say a man threatened his wife with a handgun before allegedly setting her two dogs on fire during a heated confrontation involving another woman.
The shocking allegations against 37-year-old Bobby Atkinson have sparked outrage as details emerged about the condition of the injured animals and the terrifying threats allegedly made inside the family home.
Domestic Dispute Allegedly Escalated Quickly
According to reports, the confrontation began inside the couple’s Louisville home after Atkinson’s wife allegedly discovered another woman there.
Police say tensions escalated rapidly as the woman prepared her children for school.
Investigators allege Atkinson armed himself with a handgun during the argument and threatened his wife while standing close to her.
“While holding the handgun to his side, the perpetrator advanced on the victim and made the statement ‘If we didn’t have a daughter together I’d shoot you and stand over you,’” an arrest citation states.
Fearing for her safety, the woman reportedly left the house with her children and sought an emergency protective order.
Woman Returns Home to Horrifying Discovery
According to investigators, the woman later returned to the home to retrieve medication.
She reportedly came back again after a friend informed her that Atkinson would allegedly be having a child with another woman.
When she arrived, she immediately noticed something was wrong.
Reports state the woman heard a smoke alarm sounding inside the home and smelled smoke and burning odors as she entered the residence.
Moments later, one of the family’s dogs allegedly crawled out from beneath a bed severely injured.
According to reports, the animal was “covered in ash” and suffering from open wounds and burned fur.
Authorities said both dogs, identified as Brooklyn and Seven, appeared to have some form of accelerant on their fur.
Dogs Rushed for Emergency Treatment
The injured dogs were taken to Louisville Metro Animal Services for emergency veterinary care.
Animal welfare advocates described the allegations as especially horrifying because of the intentional suffering allegedly inflicted on the pets.
Shelia Joneleit, executive director of The Arrow Fund, spoke about the disturbing nature of the case.
“When people set dogs on fire because they’re trying to make a point with their ex-spouse, it is pure terror,” Joneleit said. “It’s pure torture of the animal.”
The condition of the dogs has not been fully disclosed publicly, but reports indicate they suffered serious injuries requiring medical treatment.
Suspect Arrested and Facing Multiple Charges
Authorities arrested Atkinson at approximately 3:40 p.m. on May 21.
He now faces multiple charges, including:
- Two counts of torture of a dog or cat
- Two counts of second-degree cruelty to animals
- One count of menacing
- One count of third-degree terroristic threatening
Court records show Atkinson pleaded not guilty during his arraignment.
His bond was initially set at $20,000, but a judge later increased it to $50,000.
Wife Says She Fears for Family’s Safety
Although Atkinson’s wife declined to appear publicly on camera, she told local media outlets that she fears for her family’s safety following the alleged incident.
The case has renewed discussions about the connection between domestic violence and animal abuse, with advocates warning that violence toward pets is often tied to broader patterns of intimidation and control inside abusive relationships.
Authorities have not released additional information about the ongoing investigation or potential future court proceedings.
