Manvel, Texas – A Texas community is coming together to remember an 8-year-old boy who died after a choking incident at school, as his mother shares an emotional message focused on honoring his life rather than seeking sympathy.
Students, teachers, and family members gathered at a local park in Manvel on March 20 to pay tribute to Nicholas Gray, a third grader whose sudden passing has left a lasting impact.
Community gathers to remember young life
The memorial event included a heartfelt bubble release, giving loved ones a chance to celebrate Nicholas’ life and say goodbye.
“We wanted a way for everyone to come together and honor him,” his mother said.
The gathering brought together classmates, school staff, and community members, many of whom were deeply affected by the loss.
Tragic incident during school day
According to reports, the incident occurred on February 9 during snack time at Pomona Elementary School.
Nicholas reportedly choked on a grape while in class, prompting immediate action from those around him.
“His classmates tried to help and quickly alerted adults,” his mother shared.
School staff, including a teacher, nurse, and campus officer, responded and called 911 while attempting to assist.
Emergency efforts were unsuccessful
Officials said multiple efforts were made to save Nicholas, including the use of an airway clearance device, but the grape could not be dislodged.
He was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
“His body just couldn’t handle it anymore,” his mother said, describing the difficult moments that followed.
The family ultimately made the painful decision to let him rest after medical efforts were exhausted.
Remembering Nicholas’ joyful spirit
Nicholas is being remembered as a kind, energetic, and loving child who brought joy to those around him.
“He had a smile that could light up the whole world—not just a room.”
According to his obituary, he loved Legos, monster trucks, Spider-Man, and outdoor adventures, and cherished time spent with his siblings.

More than a month after the tragedy, Nicholas’ mother has spoken out, asking people not to view her family with pity.
“I don’t want anyone to have pity for me. I want people to know who Nicholas is.”

“We’ll live in your name, and we’ll honor your name every day.”
