Dickens, Iowa — What began as a routine shift for a veteran Iowa 911 dispatcher quickly turned into a life-changing emergency when she helped guide a woman through childbirth on the side of a highway.
The remarkable delivery occurred on March 5 along Highway 18 near Dickens, where a couple found themselves racing against time as labor progressed faster than expected.
Emergency Call Comes Just Minutes Into Shift
According to reports, Andrea Ring, a 911 dispatcher with 26 years of experience, was only 23 minutes into her shift when she received a frantic call from a man whose girlfriend was in active labor.
The couple had been trying to reach the hospital, but it quickly became clear they were running out of time.
“They didn’t think they were going to make it to the hospital,” Ring recalled.
With the baby on the way and no medical team immediately available, Ring knew she had to act quickly while remaining calm.
Dispatcher Guides Parents Through Childbirth
As the situation intensified, Ring stayed on the phone and began providing step-by-step instructions to help the couple safely deliver their baby.
Drawing not only from decades of emergency dispatch experience but also from raising five children of her own, she confidently walked the parents through the process.
“I have been doing it for a long time. I definitely have taken a lot of high-priority calls,” Ring said.
She explained that years of experience helped her remain composed during the high-pressure emergency.
Her guidance proved critical as the baby arrived before the family could reach medical care.
“I am at a stage in my career where calmness is where I am at. I just knew there were some instructions I needed to give her that I was knowledgeable about.”
Mother and Baby Safely Transported
According to Spencer Hospital, the delivery was successful, and both mother and newborn were safely transported for additional medical care after the birth.
The baby boy was later identified as Parker Ray.
Thankfully, no major complications were reported, and both mother and child were able to receive the attention they needed once they arrived at the hospital.
The successful outcome brought relief to everyone involved, especially Ring, who had spent the tense moments helping the family from miles away.
Special Coincidence Makes Story Even More Meaningful
The story became even more memorable when Ring learned an unexpected detail about the baby’s birthday.
Parker Ray was born on the exact same day as her daughter’s birthday, creating a personal connection that Ring said made the experience even more special.
The coincidence quickly became one of the most heartwarming parts of the story.
Dispatcher Honored for Extraordinary Effort
Last week, Ring received a Stork Pin, an honor awarded in emergency medical services to recognize individuals who assist during childbirth emergencies.

Her supervisor, Mel Peterson, praised Ring’s actions and highlighted how much of the successful delivery depended on her knowledge and composure.
“We have no instructions for handling emergency childbirths; this was ALL Andrea, who has birthed five children of her own.”
Despite the recognition, Ring said helping people has always been the reason she chose the profession.
“You don’t do this job for the recognition, but when you do get it, especially from your peers, I think it makes it extra special,” Ring said.
