Kodiak Island, Alaska — A tragic crash on Kodiak Island claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy after his vehicle entered a lake and left him trapped beneath the submerged wreckage, according to Alaska authorities.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a vehicle in the water, but the rescue effort ultimately ended in heartbreak.
Vehicle Found in Lake After Morning Crash
According to the Alaska State Troopers, authorities were alerted to a single-vehicle crash near Pasagshak Bay at approximately 8:03 a.m. local time on May 25.
Investigators learned that the vehicle had crashed into Lake Rose Tead, a body of water located on Kodiak Island.
Before first responders arrived, several passersby reportedly noticed the accident and attempted to help the trapped driver.
Officials said those individuals made efforts to free the teenager from the wreckage while waiting for emergency crews to arrive.
Teen Trapped Beneath Submerged Vehicle
When troopers reached the scene, they discovered the rescue operation was far more difficult than initially expected.
According to authorities, the driver was located beneath the vehicle, which had become submerged in both water and mud.
Troopers stated they were unable to immediately recover the teenager because he was “trapped underneath the vehicle submerged in water and mud.”
The challenging conditions complicated efforts to reach the victim and safely remove him from beneath the wrecked vehicle.
Authorities later determined that the teenager had died before emergency responders arrived.
