Grayson, Georgia — The Atlanta nightlife community is mourning the loss of 44-year-old Sharell Canty, a well-known nightclub owner who was fatally shot inside a Georgia home in what authorities have described as a domestic-related homicide.
Friends, family members and colleagues are now paying tribute to the businesswoman, remembering her as a respected entrepreneur, loyal friend and influential figure in Atlanta’s entertainment scene.
Club Owner Found Dead Inside Home
According to investigators, Canty was found dead inside a residence in Grayson, Georgia, on the morning of May 24.
Authorities said a neighbor discovered her body and contacted law enforcement. Investigators later determined that Canty had suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
Arrest warrants obtained by local media reportedly state that the Opium nightclub co-owner was shot twice in the head.
Following the discovery, detectives launched an investigation and quickly identified a suspect.
Woman Charged in Connection With Death
Authorities arrested 48-year-old Stephany Byrom on the same day Canty’s body was discovered.
According to court records, Byrom has been charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
She remains in custody at the Gwinnett County Jail while the case moves through the legal system.
Police have not publicly disclosed the exact nature of the relationship between Canty and Byrom.
However, the Gwinnett County Police Department stated that investigators are treating the case as a “domestic-related homicide.”
Officials also emphasized that the incident appears to be isolated.
“Right now, we do believe that this was an isolated incident, so there should be no concern for the public at this time,” Sgt. Jennifer Richter told.

As news of Canty’s death spread, tributes began pouring in from friends and members of Atlanta’s entertainment industry.
Many described her as a dynamic personality whose presence could instantly energize a room.
“We’re all just mourning right now. We’re all missing our sister, missing our friend, missing Sharell,” friend Henry told 11 Alive.
Henry also reflected on Canty’s larger-than-life presence.
“She had her own aura,” he said, adding, “when she walks into a club, everybody knows Sharell’s here.”
Friends credited Canty’s business instincts and leadership for helping make Opium nightclub a successful destination in Atlanta’s nightlife scene.
“She knew how to run a business, she knew what to do to keep the business going. She just had people in place that helped her align the business and take it to the top,” Henry said.
Legacy Expected to Live On
Despite the heartbreak surrounding her death, friends say they intend to honor Canty by continuing the work and vision she helped build.
“Sharell gonna tell us to party and ball like she’s still here,” Henry said. “We’re going to keep her legacy alive. We’re gonna keep Opium alive.”
Former WNBA player Tamera Young also shared an emotional tribute following the tragedy.

“This feels like a sick dream,” Young wrote. “One of my favorite people. I’m hurting so bad typing this.”
She continued:
“You were a real one, a good one, a heart of gold. You wanted people to be happy and enjoy themselves.”
Young also reflected on what would unknowingly become their final time together.
“Had I known Thursday night would be our last dinner and night kicking it I would have just stayed longer.”

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue gathering evidence and reviewing the circumstances surrounding Canty’s death.
