85-Year-Old Movie Theater Worker Receives $146K After Viral Video Inspires Thousands to Help Her Retire

Maryville, Tennessee — An 85-year-old movie theater employee in Tennessee is receiving an outpouring of support from strangers after a viral video inspired thousands of people to donate toward her retirement.

The heartwarming story centers on Mary Ellen Eron, a longtime theater worker whose dedication and work ethic captured the attention of millions online.

Viral Video Sparks Nationwide Support

The story began when moviegoer Brooklyn Green visited a theater in Maryville and noticed Eron working during her shift.

Green recorded a video showing the 85-year-old employee carrying a heavy black garbage bag while pushing a cleaning cart through the theater.

The clip quickly gained traction online, eventually attracting more than 13 million views. Alongside the video, Green shared a message encouraging people to help the elderly worker.

“Let’s secretly help retire this beautiful woman. No one deserves to work at this age,” Green wrote.

The post resonated with viewers across the country, many of whom were touched by Eron’s dedication after decades of work.

Fundraiser Raises More Than $146,000

After the video gained attention, Green decided to launch a fundraiser to help Eron enjoy retirement. At the time, Green knew very little about the woman she was trying to help.

“I knew nothing about her. I didn’t even know her name when I went to the theater,” Green told WATE. “I just decided that she was working so hard, and I aspired to be like her one day.”

She added:

“Her physical appearance didn’t look too comfortable, especially since the way she was working so hard.”

Green set an ambitious fundraising goal of $200,000. Although donations were eventually paused, supporters contributed an impressive $146,317.

More than 7,500 people donated to the campaign.

Emotional Surprise Leaves Worker Speechless

On Wednesday, Green shared the emotional moment she revealed the fundraiser’s total to Eron.

When presented with the figure written on a piece of paper, Eron appeared stunned by the generosity of strangers.

“Oh my goodness. That’s a lot of money,” Eron said after seeing the amount.

Green responded with encouragement and admiration.

“That’s a lot of money and you deserve every bit of it,” Green said.

The touching exchange quickly drew praise online, with many viewers celebrating the kindness shown by complete strangers.

Longtime Employee Known for Helping Others

According to reports, Eron has worked at the movie theater for 45 years.

Friends and community members say she has spent years helping others through her local church and charitable efforts supporting people experiencing homelessness.

Many supporters noted that the fundraiser was not just about helping her financially, but also recognizing decades of service and generosity toward others.

The campaign quickly became an example of how social media can sometimes be used to create positive change in someone’s life.

Retirement Decision Remains Hers

In a message shared after receiving the surprise, Eron thanked everyone who contributed to the fundraiser.

“Thank you so very much to all the wonderful people that have donated money to the GoFundMe,” she said.

“I’m overwhelmed and certainly blessed by the Lord and you wonderful people. Thank you once more.”

While the fundraiser has given Eron new financial freedom, reports indicate that the decision about when to retire remains entirely hers.

According to the theater’s manager, Eron will decide for herself when she is ready to step away from the job she has held for nearly half a century.
