Kerman, California — What was supposed to be a memorable celebration for graduating seniors quickly turned chaotic after a confrontation following a California high school graduation ceremony escalated into a large disturbance involving students, family members and police officers.
Authorities say the incident unfolded after Kerman High School’s graduation ceremony, eventually resulting in multiple arrests and drawing significant attention online after videos of the confrontation surfaced.
Argument After Graduation Sparks Confrontation
According to police, the trouble began in a parking lot shortly after the graduation ceremony concluded. Investigators said a dispute erupted between a graduating senior and another teenage boy.
Authorities noted that the senior involved in the confrontation was already on probation and was detained by officers before the situation escalated further.
Police believe the situation could have ended there had additional people not become involved.
“It should have stopped there, but at some point, they had family members, emotions are high, decided to insert themselves into that situation,” Kerman Police Lieutenant Wil Barcoma said.
Videos Show Tense Struggle With Officers
Footage recorded at the scene showed multiple police officers attempting to regain control as the confrontation intensified.
The videos captured a chaotic scene involving officers, graduates and family members pushing and struggling during the incident.
One woman, later identified as the graduating senior’s mother, was knocked to the ground during the disturbance.
Witnesses nearby quickly moved to help her as she rolled on the pavement following the encounter.
Authorities also alleged that a teenage girl struck a police officer and resisted arrest during the confrontation.
Police say those actions contributed to the growing disorder officers faced while trying to restore calm.
Four People Arrested Following Melee
The incident ultimately resulted in the arrest of four individuals.
According to police, both the graduating senior and the other teenage boy involved in the initial dispute were charged with challenging to fight.
The senior also faces allegations of violating court orders and obstruction. Meanwhile, his mother was arrested and charged with resisting a police officer.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding the fourth arrest but confirmed several individuals were booked into jail as a result of the incident.
Graduates Say Incident Overshadowed Celebration
Many students expressed disappointment that the disturbance became part of what should have been a positive milestone.
Graduating senior Joban Hans said the incident was not how he wanted to remember the occasion.
“I don’t think that that’s a way that I would want to remember my graduation,” Hans said.
He also encouraged students to avoid bringing personal disputes to important events.
“If you have like a, sorta beef, just handle it elsewhere. Maybe not at a graduation.”
The comments reflected the frustration felt by many attendees who hoped to celebrate without disruption.
Similar Graduation Brawls Reported in Region
The Kerman incident came just days after another graduation-related disturbance in California’s Central Valley.
Authorities reported that six people were arrested following a separate graduation fight involving students and family members.
According to reports, one of those arrested was graduating senior Adam Velasquez, whose family claimed the altercation began after comments were made about his late brother.
Investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding both incidents. The latest graduation-day chaos has renewed conversations about security, crowd management and maintaining safety during major school celebrations.
