Washington, D.C. — A tragic accident has left a Washington, D.C., community grieving after a 15-year-old girl was fatally shot while spending time with a friend inside an apartment where police say an unsecured firearm was easily accessible.
Authorities described the incident as a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers associated with improperly stored firearms.
Teen Killed Inside Southeast D.C. Apartment
According to police, the shooting occurred Saturday afternoon at an apartment on Barnaby Street SE.
Investigators said two 15-year-old girls were alone inside the apartment when they gained access to an unsecured firearm.
Authorities believe the teenagers began handling the weapon when it unexpectedly discharged. Police said the bullet struck one of the girls in the head.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but the teen later died from her injuries. Officials described the shooting as a tragic accident rather than an intentional act of violence.
Friends for Years Before Tragedy
A woman who identified herself as a family friend of the surviving teen spoke about the devastating impact the incident has had on the young girl.
“She’s feeling real bad about what happened,” the woman said. “She keeps having breakdown moments because she wasn’t clear that it had caused her demise.”
According to those close to the teens, the two girls had been friends for years.
“From my understanding, they’ve been friends for a long time,” the woman said. “They would consider themselves best friends.”
Police said the surviving teen immediately ran for help after the firearm discharged. Authorities confirmed she is not facing charges at this time.
The family friend described the teenager’s emotional condition as overwhelming.
“She’s distraught right now, I mean, devastated,” she said.
Apartment Occupant Arrested
Investigators shifted their focus toward the individual responsible for the apartment where the shooting occurred.
According to D.C. Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll, the apartment occupant was a family friend and has since been arrested.
“MPD continues to investigate the occupant who actually was the person who lived inside the location,” Carroll said. “At this time, that person has been placed under arrest for firearms charges.”
Authorities said the firearm was left unsecured, allowing the teenagers to access it. Police also revealed the weapon was not legally registered.
“The firearm that was inside a location was not secured as the young people were able to access it. Additionally, it was not registered,” Carroll added.
Calls for Greater Gun Safety Awareness
The tragedy has renewed discussions about firearm storage and safety education for families.
The family friend who spoke publicly said the incident should serve as a wake-up call for parents and guardians.
“I believe that this, at this time, we need to do awareness to our kids. We need to have learning lessons with our kids about, that’s not something that they touch, that’s not something that they play with,” she said.

She also urged families to have direct conversations about firearm safety in the home.
“You know, the conversations need to be had in the home. I believe we even should make something mandatory that families have had awareness in the home when they, you know, bring these things to the home.”
Investigation Continues
Police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting while supporting the families affected by the tragedy.
Authorities have not publicly released the identity of the teen who died.
Meanwhile, loved ones are mourning a life cut short in what investigators describe as a preventable accident involving an unsecured firearm.
