Portillo’s is Coming to Michigan Avenue — But Not in the Way Chicago Fans Expect

Chicago, Illinois — One of Chicago’s most recognizable restaurant brands is preparing to make its mark on Michigan Avenue, but customers expecting the traditional Portillo’s experience may be surprised by what they find.

The iconic chain has announced plans for a new downtown location that will introduce a different format designed specifically for customers looking for a faster and more convenient experience.

Portillo’s Announces New Michigan Avenue Location

According to a recent company announcement, Portillo’s plans to open a restaurant at 304 N. Michigan Ave., near the intersection of East Wacker Place.

Signage reading “coming soon” has already appeared at the location, signaling that preparations are underway.

While an official opening date has not yet been announced, the project represents one of the company’s most visible additions in Chicago in recent years.

The new site places the restaurant on one of the city’s busiest and most recognizable streets, attracting both residents and tourists throughout the year.

New Concept Designed for Customers on the Go

Unlike traditional Portillo’s restaurants, the Michigan Avenue location will not include the typical full dine-in experience many customers are familiar with.

Instead, the company plans to launch one of its first walk-up, in-line restaurant concepts.

“Our Michigan Avenue restaurant will be one of the first in-line, walk-up Portillo’s locations, designed for guests on the go who want a quick and easy way to get their Portillo’s fix,” the company said in its announcement.

The concept reflects changing customer preferences, particularly in busy urban areas where speed and convenience often take priority over large dining spaces.

A Chicago Brand With Deep Roots

Portillo’s has been a Chicago-area staple for decades. The company was founded by Dick Portillo in 1963 as a small hot dog stand in Villa Park.

Since then, the chain has grown into one of the region’s most recognizable restaurant brands.

Portillo’s is best known for classic Chicago favorites, including Italian beef sandwiches, Chicago-style hot dogs, and its famous chocolate cake and chocolate cake shakes.

The restaurant remains a must-visit destination for many visitors looking to experience traditional Chicago flavors.

Expansion Continues Across the Country

The Michigan Avenue project is just one part of Portillo’s broader expansion strategy.

The company currently operates more than 90 restaurants across 10 states, continuing to grow both locally and nationally.

Recently, Portillo’s expanded into Texas and opened its first airport location at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, bringing its menu to travelers passing through one of the nation’s busiest airports.

The company has also experimented with smaller restaurant formats that prioritize drive-thru service, pickup orders and efficiency.

Smaller Formats Becoming More Common

In recent years, Portillo’s has introduced compact restaurant models that operate without traditional dining rooms.

Several of these locations have already opened in communities including Joliet, Rosemont, and Orland Park.

The Michigan Avenue concept appears to be the next step in that strategy, focusing on serving customers quickly in a high-traffic downtown environment.

As anticipation builds, many Chicago food lovers will be watching closely to see when the new location officially opens its doors.
