DANVILLE, KY – A local fire department is gaining viral praise online after executing a dramatic, movie-like water rescue to save a stranded cow from a Kentucky lake on Sunday.
The Sunday Emergency
The Boyle County Fire Department responded to an emergency call on Sunday, June 7, regarding a large cow stranded in a lake just outside of Danville. Recognizing the unique danger, the department dispatched specialized crews trained in both water rescue and large animal emergencies.
Responders launched rescue boats into the water, carefully secured the cow to one of the vessels, and slowly guided the swimming animal back toward the shore.
A Challenging Trek On Land
While getting the cow to the bank was a success, the department noted that the hardest part of the operation was just beginning.
“Once on land, firefighters faced additional challenges due to the rocky terrain and steep embankment,” the department shared. Crews had to work in unison to maneuver the heavy animal safely through sharp rocks and up a steep hillside to safety.
Community Reacts To Viral Rescue
In rural communities, fire departments often act as an all-purpose safety net, but a panicked, large animal in deep water poses a severe risk to both itself and responders. The calm teamwork displayed by the Boyle County crew quickly drew widespread praise online.
Social media users flooded local news posts with support, with comments reading “Salute to our heroes” and “Well done!”
Officials stated they are unsure how long the cow had been in the water before discovery. Fortunately, the animal appeared entirely unharmed and is expected to make a full recovery.
