9-Week-Old Kitten Saves Sleeping Owner From Fire but Dies Trying to Escape

TILLAMOOK, Ore. — An Oregon man says his 9-week-old kitten saved his life during a devastating house fire, waking him just in time to escape — but tragically losing its own life in the process.

The fire broke out on Feb. 21 at a home in Tillamook, where Donald VanWormer, 56, had been asleep inside the house.

According to VanWormer, his kitten Fred suddenly jumped onto his face and began pawing at him, alerting him that something was wrong.

“Fred jumped on my face and started hitting me with his paws. He was going crazy,” VanWormer said. “He woke me up, then I smelled the smoke and realized what was happening.”

VanWormer said he had been sleeping when the blaze erupted inside the home.

After being woken by Fred, he quickly realized the house was filling with smoke.

He attempted to escape the bedroom while holding the kitten, but the path out was quickly becoming dangerous.

VanWormer said a dresser and heavy smoke blocked the exit from the room, forcing him to find another way out.

The situation escalated quickly as the fire continued spreading through the house.

VanWormer managed to make his way into the living room while struggling through thick smoke.

He said the conditions inside the home were becoming extremely dangerous.

“I made it to the living room just as the ceiling started caving in,” he recalled. “I was stumbling but finally got out the door.”

After reaching safety outside the home, VanWormer realized Fred was no longer with him.

Owner Tried to Go Back Inside for Pet

VanWormer attempted to return to the burning house to rescue the kitten but fell and struck his head.

When he regained consciousness, firefighters were already at the scene battling the flames.

“When I came to, I tried to get back inside to find him, but the firefighters stopped me,” VanWormer said. “I was begging them to help me find him.”

Fire crews later located Fred inside the house after extinguishing the fire.
