CERRITOS, CA – A tragic weekend shooting near the Los Cerritos Center has claimed the life of a 15-year-old high school student, officials confirmed.
Fatal Shooting Near Shopping Center
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has identified the victim as Darnell Jones. The shooting occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Saturday near the Chick-fil-A located on Gridley Road, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD).
Deputies arriving at the crowded shopping area found the teenager suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. No other injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
Grieving Family Seeks Answers
Darnell was the youngest of eight children and was preparing to start his junior year at Magnolia High School in Anaheim. His father, Tyrell Jones, shared an emotional plea for community unity following the tragedy.
“Darnell was a good boy. He was just a kid,” his father stated, remembering a happier time when he recently bought basketball shoes with his son at the same mall. “We need more community. We need more love. We need to teach our youngins, it’s OK not to be OK.”
Investigation and Suspect Details
LASD Homicide investigators have not yet released a description of the suspect or a motive behind the shooting. Crime scene footage showed the fast-food restaurant’s parking lot cordoned off with yellow tape as multiple sheriff’s SUVs flooded the area to gather evidence.
