Multi-State Tornado Outbreak Leaves Destructive Trail Across Midwest

EFFINGHAM, IL – A powerful and destructive tornado outbreak tore through at least five Midwestern states on Wednesday evening, flattening buildings, ripping roofs off schools, and leaving tens of thousands without power.

Severe Destruction in Illinois

Illinois faced the brunt of the storm’s fury. In Effingham County, a massive tornado damaged multiple buildings and lofted debris over 20 miles into the air.

Further north in Blue Mound, located about 30 miles east of Springfield, a tornado struck an elementary school. The storm ripped away a portion of the building’s roof, leaving classrooms exposed to the elements. Elsewhere in the village, large trees were snapped at their bases and thrown onto residential homes. In nearby Macon, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported that power poles were snapped off clean near a major highway.

Rescue Operations Underway in Indiana

The outbreak also brought severe destruction to Indiana. In the town of Stinesville, a potent tornado caused a building’s roof to completely collapse. Emergency officials rushed to the scene and are actively working to rescue individuals trapped inside the structure.

As of late Wednesday night, utility networks were severely crippled, with PowerOutage.US reporting:

  • Over 52,000 customers without power in Illinois.
  • Over 11,000 customers without power in Indiana.

Train Derailment and Hurricane-Force Winds

The destructive system initially ramped up Wednesday morning with straight-line winds tracking through Iowa and northern Illinois. A hurricane-force wind gust of 94 mph was officially clocked near Albion, Iowa.

In Monmouth, Illinois, powerful winds caused a BNSF freight train to derail Wednesday morning. Monmouth Chief of Police Joe Switzer confirmed that while the derailment caused structural damage and downed power lines nearby, fortunately, no injuries or chemical spills were reported.

Threat Continues Into Thursday

A Level 4 out of 5 severe weather risk remains in effect through early Thursday morning for parts of Illinois and Indiana, including Indianapolis.

The main threat is expected to transition into widespread damaging wind gusts exceeding 75 mph and baseball-sized hail as the storm system merges into a cohesive line moving southeast toward western Ohio before clearing out to the East.
