PACIFICA, CA – A local fisherwoman is recovering after a massive “sneaker” wave swept her off her feet and dragged her 30 feet into the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday.
The Incident
Pacifica resident Bae Cadotte was fishing from a popular Bay Area beach when the rogue wave suddenly struck. Cadotte stated she realized the danger the moment she saw the wave approaching, noting that it easily swallowed her up and pulled her away from the shoreline.
While submerged, Cadotte managed to shed her heavy fishing waders—a critical move that prevented them from filling with water and dragging her under.
Heroic Rescue by Fellow Fishermen
Nearby fishermen witnessed the incident and rushed into action, risking their own lives to pull Cadotte out of the dangerous current.
One rescuer, who chose to remain anonymous, told local reporters that fishermen stick together, adding, “I could have died, but I saved a life.” Emergency responders arrived shortly after she was safely brought back to the beach.
Survival and Minor Injuries
Fortunately, Cadotte survived the terrifying ordeal with only minor injuries, which she described as “ocean whiplash.”
Reflecting on the experience, Cadotte expressed gratitude for her survival and emphasized that fishing is a means of survival and food for many in the community. She stated that she plans to return to fishing soon, but will be wearing a life vest moving forward.
Call to Reopen Pacifica Pier
Following the incident, Cadotte is advocating for the reopening of the recently closed Pacifica Municipal Pier, arguing that the structure provides a much safer environment for local anglers. “The pier saves lives,” Cadotte warned. “The ocean is not our friend.”
