DELAND, FL – A 40-year-old Walmart cashier was arrested on felony grand theft charges after allegedly stealing a validation receipt an elderly customer needed to claim a $2,700 Florida Lottery prize.
The Incident at Walmart
The incident occurred on Sunday morning at the Walmart convenience store located on South Woodland Boulevard in DeLand. According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, an elderly man visited the store to validate his winning lottery ticket.
The cashier on duty, identified as Tameka Hall, provided instructions on how to claim the money. However, hours later, the customer realized he was missing the crucial validation receipt required by the state to redeem the prize. When he returned to the store to report the issue, management launched an internal investigation.
Caught on Surveillance Video
Store managers reviewed security footage from the encounter. According to investigators, the video allegedly showed Hall folding the customer’s lottery receipt and slipping it into the left pocket of her uniform vest before finishing her shift and leaving for the day.
On Monday morning, deputies confronted Hall inside the store’s security office. Hall claimed she became distracted by another customer and placed the receipt in her pocket with the intention of giving it to a manager later.
Deputies escorted Hall to her vehicle, where the winning lottery receipt was successfully recovered. Hall was immediately placed under arrest. Walmart has since confirmed that she is no longer employed by the company.
Why the Receipt Was Critical
In Florida, lottery prizes over $599 cannot be paid out at a standard retail counter. Winners must claim these larger amounts at a Florida Lottery district office or via mail, which requires:
- The original winning ticket
- The store’s validation receipt
- A completed Winner Claim Form
- A valid government ID
Because the paperwork is legally tied to the transaction, losing the receipt can halt the entire payout process.
Lottery Safety Tips for Players
Lottery experts urge players to protect their winnings immediately upon checking a ticket. To avoid fraud or theft, players should follow these steps:
- Sign the back of the ticket immediately; the Florida Lottery pays whoever’s signature is on the ticket.
- Take clear photos of both the front and back of the ticket.
- Keep the ticket, validation receipt, and claim forms together in a secure location until the payout is complete.
