ST. LOUIS, MO – A persistent and dangerous June weather pattern will continue to unleash severe thunderstorms, destructive winds, and flash flooding across the central and eastern United States throughout the upcoming week.
Midwest and Central Plains Under Immediate Threat
Following a barrage of severe weather from Wyoming to Kansas over the weekend, the storm system is shifting directly into the Midwest. Communities stretching from Oklahoma City to St. Louis face an immediate threat of:
- Damaging wind gusts
- Large hail and flooding downpours
- Isolated tornadoes
Many of these areas are already dealing with saturated soil from multiple rounds of recent storms, significantly increasing the risk of immediate flash flooding.
East Coast and I-95 Corridor Bracing for Monday
As the storm system advances eastward on Monday, the severe weather threat will spread toward the heavily populated Interstate 95 corridor.
Major cities from Raleigh, NC, to Philadelphia, PA, are on high alert for damaging thunderstorms. Localized flash flooding and major travel disruptions are expected to impact the Monday evening commute.
Renewed Flooding Risks for the South
A stalled cold front stretching from the mid-Atlantic back into the Southern Plains will act as a trigger for repeated rounds of rainfall.
Parts of the South recently impacted by former Tropical Rainstorm Arthur are particularly vulnerable. Because waterways are already running high, officials warn that even a modest amount of additional rainfall could instantly trigger renewed, severe flooding.
Storms Shift Back to the Plains by Mid-Week
By Tuesday and Wednesday, the core of the severe weather activity will track back toward the Plains. Daily rounds of thunderstorms will ignite from eastern Colorado into Nebraska, Kansas, and the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles.
Meteorologists warn that these mid-week storms could produce destructive wind gusts approaching 85 mph along with golf-ball-sized hail. The threat is expected to expand even further north into eastern Montana by Thursday.
