SAN FRANCISCO, CA – After a weekend of record-breaking heat that saw temperatures soaring into the 80s, the Bay Area is facing a dramatic weather shift. Forecasters are warning residents to prepare for plummeting temperatures, heavy downpours, and a potential for thunderstorms as a new weather pattern takes hold of the region.
A Major Shift in the Forecast
The “death ridge” of high pressure that dominated the weekend is officially moving east. In its place, a trough of low pressure from the Gulf of Alaska is moving in, expected to remain parked over the Bay Area for the duration of the week.
“It’s kind of an overall pattern change,” Dylan Flynn, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Bay Area office, told SFGATE.
Timeline: When the Rain Hits
While the cooling trend begins immediately, the most significant changes are slated for midweek:
- Monday & Tuesday: Temperatures will begin to dip, particularly along the coast.
- Wednesday: A cold front is on track to join the low-pressure system.
- Thursday & Friday: The best chances for widespread rain across the region.
How Much Rainfall to Expect
Meteorologists describe the upcoming precipitation as “beneficial” rather than hazardous. Right now, the distribution looks uniform:
- Coastal Mountains: Could see up to 1 inch of rain.
- Rest of the Bay Area: Slated for roughly 0.25 inches.
The Lightning Factor: There is currently a 10% to 20% chance of thunderstorms. If these develop, residents could see localized heavy downpours, lightning strikes, and isolated flooding.
Temperatures to Plummet
If you’ve enjoyed the 80-degree weather, it’s time to find your sweater. Coastal residents will see a 10-degree drop into the 70s by Monday, with temperatures further sinking into the 60s for the remainder of the week under thick cloud cover.
Looking Ahead: An Active April
The shift marks a refreshing change after a historically dry March. Flynn noted that the first half of April is looking active with above-normal chances for precipitation.
“We’re not expecting to make up the deficit we got in March, but we should move in that direction,” Flynn said.
Local Tip: If you have outdoor plans, today is your last chance for clear sun. As Flynn puts it, “There’s going to be a drastic change in the weather tomorrow.”
