Lake Jackson, Texas — Buc-ee’s, the popular Texas-based travel center chain known for its massive stores and famously clean restrooms, is facing unexpected criticism after receiving the lowest possible rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
The BBB recently issued Buc-ee’s an “F” rating, citing the company’s failure to respond to dozens of customer complaints filed through the consumer watchdog organization. The rating has sparked conversation among customers as the brand continues to expand across the United States.
The BBB says Buc-ee’s did not respond to nearly 90 complaints submitted by customers, a key factor that led to the failing grade.
Despite the rating, the company remains one of the fastest-growing convenience store brands in the country.
BBB cites lack of response to complaints
The Better Business Bureau assigns ratings ranging from A+ to F, based on factors such as how companies respond to customer complaints, business transparency, and dispute resolution efforts.
While customer reviews themselves do not directly determine the score, how a business handles complaints plays a major role in the final rating.
According to the BBB website, Buc-ee’s received its failing grade primarily because the company did not respond to dozens of consumer complaints submitted through the organization.
Complaints mention pricing and customer service issues
Recent complaints posted to the BBB platform include concerns about product quality, high prices, customer service experiences, and return policies.
One customer complaint from February described dissatisfaction with a food item purchased at one of the stores.
“Bought the chicken, bacon, avocado ranch wrap… it was so disgusting that I had to throw it out the window,” the complaint stated, noting the product lacked advertised ingredients and cost $9.49.
Other complaints cited difficulty contacting the company when problems occur.
One customer claimed they were unable to recover a lost or stolen gift card and said the company only provides email support rather than a phone number, making it difficult to resolve issues.
The BBB said the number of unanswered complaints contributed significantly to the chain’s current rating.
Popular brand continues rapid expansion
Despite the BBB grade, Buc-ee’s remains a highly recognizable brand among road-trip travelers across the United States.
The chain currently operates 54 large-format stores in 11 states, with additional locations planned in several more states in the coming years.

Upcoming expansion targets include:
- Ohio
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- Kansas
- Louisiana
- Nebraska
- North Carolina
- Wisconsin
Each Buc-ee’s location is typically designed on a massive scale.
Most stores feature hundreds of parking spaces and more than 100 fuel pumps, making them among the largest convenience stores in the country.
Cult-favorite food items drive customer loyalty
Part of Buc-ee’s popularity comes from its extensive food offerings and branded snacks.
The chain’s signature items include:
- Beaver Nuggets
- Fresh brisket sandwiches
- Homemade fudge and bakery items
These products have helped build a loyal following among travelers who view Buc-ee’s stops as a major part of road trips.
Company still ranks high in national surveys
Interestingly, the failing BBB grade contrasts with several recent customer satisfaction rankings.
In the 2025 American Customer Satisfaction Index, Buc-ee’s ranked No. 5 among convenience store chains, outperforming brands such as Shell and ExxonMobil.
The chain also earned the top spot in dunnhumby’s 2025 quick-service restaurant rankings, beating major names like Chick-fil-A and In-N-Out in consumer preference surveys.
High wages and employee benefits draw attention
Another reason Buc-ee’s frequently makes headlines is its wage structure.
Hiring signs at many locations advertise starting pay between $16 and $20 per hour, while full-time managers can earn between $100,000 and $225,000 annually.
The company also advertises benefits including:
- 401(k) retirement plans with full company matching
- Three weeks of paid vacation
- Health benefits for full-time employees
These policies have helped Buc-ee’s build a reputation as a competitive employer within the convenience store industry.
Still, the BBB rating highlights growing pressure on companies to respond quickly to customer complaints — especially as brands expand into new regions and attract more customers nationwide.
