Glacier National Park, Montana — A California baseball professional is facing an uncertain future after surviving a terrifying grizzly bear attack that left his arm severely damaged and may have jeopardized his long-term career in the sport.
Daniel Crago, 32, of San Diego, was hiking along the popular Grinnell Glacier Trail in Glacier National Park on May 28 when a routine outdoor adventure suddenly turned into a life-threatening encounter with one of North America’s most powerful predators.
The attack left Crago with devastating injuries that required multiple surgeries and months of rehabilitation ahead.
Hike Turned Into a Fight for Survival
According to Crago, he and a friend had spent several days exploring the park and had already completed more than 25 miles of hiking before the frightening encounter occurred.
As they approached the upper portion of the Grinnell Glacier Trail on their final day, Crago unexpectedly came across a grizzly bear.
He later explained that the animal was positioned above him on the mountainside and was much closer than he initially realized.
“No more than 15 feet above me on the mountainside was a larger grizzly,” Crago recalled.
Following standard wildlife safety guidance, he attempted to alert the bear to his presence instead of startling it.
Bear Charged Despite Warning Calls
Crago repeatedly shouted “Hey bear!” in hopes of avoiding a confrontation.
Instead, he said the animal made eye contact and immediately charged toward him.
The attack unfolded within seconds.
“I just kind of thought, ‘This is it,’” Crago recalled.
The grizzly reportedly bit down on his right arm and dragged him approximately 20 feet before eventually releasing him and running off down the mountain.
Despite the severity of the attack, Crago was fortunate to avoid injuries to some of the most critical areas of his arm.
“Thankfully, the bear didn’t injure the wrist, didn’t injure the elbow. It was just a complete crush of the bones, the forearm bones,” Crago said.
Recovery Continues After Multiple Surgeries
Crago was hospitalized following the attack and later underwent several surgeries to repair the extensive damage to his arm.
He has since returned to San Diego, where he continues treatment and rehabilitation.
His father, George Crago, said the recovery process remains difficult and painful.
“Thank you for caring but he’s still in a lot of pain and has a long road ahead of him,” he said. “This may have ended his career in baseball.”
The possibility of losing the career he spent years building has become one of the most challenging aspects of the ordeal.
Baseball Career Now Uncertain
Over the past decade, Crago has worked with several Major League Baseball organizations, including the Detroit Tigers and the San Diego Padres.
While it remains unclear how much function he will regain in his arm, the injuries have raised concerns about whether he will be able to continue working in professional baseball at the same level.
Despite the uncertainty, Crago has remained positive and grateful for surviving the attack.
In a social media post after leaving the hospital, he described the experience as a second chance at life.
“I don’t post much but I’ve been granted a second chance at life and I’m feeling extremely grateful to be able to tell this story,” Crago wrote.

Community Rallies Around Survivor
Supporters have rallied around Crago during his recovery, contributing to an online fundraiser established to help cover medical expenses.
The fundraising campaign has nearly reached its $60,000 goal, reflecting the widespread support he has received from friends, family, and members of the baseball community.
Although the attack dramatically changed his life, Crago says it has not changed his love for nature and outdoor adventures.
For now, his focus remains on healing, rebuilding strength in his arm, and adapting to whatever challenges lie ahead.
