Garden Grove, California — Emergency officials in Southern California issued urgent evacuation orders Friday after a massive chemical storage tank at an aerospace manufacturing facility entered what authorities described as an “active crisis,” raising fears of a toxic spill or catastrophic explosion.
The alarming situation unfolded at GKN Aerospace in Garden Grove, where firefighters and hazardous materials crews have been battling to stabilize a dangerous chemical leak involving a volatile industrial substance used in aircraft manufacturing.
Officials Warn Tank Could Spill or Explode
During an emergency news conference, Orange County Fire Authority officials revealed that the situation had rapidly deteriorated overnight.
Authorities said the crisis centers around a 34,000-gallon storage tank containing methyl methacrylate (MMA), a highly flammable plastic epoxy commonly used in the aerospace industry.
On Thursday evening, crews discovered the tank was leaking and releasing toxic fumes, prompting firefighters to implement emergency cooling measures in an effort to stabilize the situation.
Initially, officials believed the danger had been contained and even allowed some residents to return home. However, conditions reportedly worsened dramatically by Friday morning.
“We have determined that the tank that is in the biggest crisis is in fact unable to be secured and mitigated,” said Incident Commander and Orange County Fire Division Chief Craig Covey.
Emergency Crews Prepare for “Catastrophic Outcomes”
Authorities warned that crews are now preparing for two potentially devastating scenarios.
According to officials, the tank could either rupture and spill between 6,000 and 7,000 gallons of dangerous chemicals into the surrounding area, or it could enter what experts call “thermal runaway” — a dangerous chemical reaction that could trigger an explosion.
Officials fear an explosion could ignite neighboring tanks containing fuel and other hazardous materials, potentially creating a much larger industrial disaster.
“We are setting up these evacuations in preparation for these two options: It fails, or it blows up,” Covey said.
Fire officials stressed that while there is currently no active toxic plume spreading through the community, residents should still evacuate immediately due to the unpredictable nature of the emergency.
Authorities have not provided a timeline for when the tank could potentially fail or explode.
Evacuation Orders Expanded Across Community
As conditions worsened, local authorities expanded the evacuation zone around the facility to protect nearby residents.
Garden Grove Police Chief Amir El-Farra urged the public to follow all evacuation orders and avoid impacted areas until further notice.
“Community safety is our highest priority, and we want to see this come to a successful resolution, but we need your help,” El-Farra said.
Officials established two emergency evacuation centers in Garden Grove and Cypress to assist displaced families forced to leave their homes.
Law enforcement agencies and mutual aid partners remained stationed throughout the area Friday as crews continued monitoring the unstable tank.
Federal Officials Monitoring Situation
The dangerous situation has also drawn the attention of federal officials.
Rep. Derek Tran said his office has been coordinating closely with emergency responders and federal agencies, including FEMA and the Environmental Protection Agency, to ensure resources are available if the crisis escalates further.

“I am in contact with federal disaster relief officials, including Fema and the EPA, to urge them to provide any available federal assistance for Garden Grove,” Tran said in a statement.
He also encouraged residents to follow evacuation instructions and avoid entering restricted areas until authorities declare the situation safe.
