Largo, Florida — A new dining destination in Largo is introducing locals to traditional Eastern European comfort food, offering dishes inspired by family recipes from Hungary, Germany, and Poland.
Monika’s European Kitchen, located on East Bay Drive, is drawing attention for its slow-cooked meals, handmade dumplings, and authentic recipes that reflect generations of European culinary tradition.
The restaurant focuses on hearty dishes that owners say are meant to feel like “European soul food”, bringing the flavors of old-world kitchens to Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Authentic European comfort food takes center stage
At Monika’s European Kitchen, the menu features a wide range of traditional Eastern European dishes prepared using time-honored cooking methods.
Customers can enjoy staples such as goulash, schnitzels, handmade dumplings, sausages, and slow-cooked stews, all made with recipes inspired by family traditions.
Owner Chad Belson says the restaurant was built around the idea of serving authentic comfort food that reminds people of home.
“Monika’s is a European cuisine-based sit-down restaurant. It’s what somebody coined as European soul food,” Belson said.
“We make authentic, slow and low-cooked comfort food. And people absolutely love it.”
Many of the dishes take hours to prepare, focusing on rich flavors and traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations.
Popular menu items highlight European classics
Some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes include chicken paprikash, Hungarian beef stew, and traditional goulash soup.
The menu also features a wide variety of schnitzels, which have become one of the restaurant’s signature offerings.
“We have schnitzels all over the place,” Belson said.
Both chicken and pork schnitzel are served breaded and fried until golden brown. One variation, known as Hunter schnitzel, is topped with mushroom gravy.
Another popular item is the “Tour of Germany” platter, which offers a sampling of traditional German sausages including bratwurst, white bratwurst, and knackwurst.
The dish is served with classic sides such as sauerkraut and potatoes, giving diners a full taste of German cuisine.
From food markets to a Florida restaurant
The restaurant’s journey began in New Jersey, where Chad and Monika Belson first launched their food business through pop-up markets and mall kiosks.
After gaining a loyal following, the couple decided to expand and open their first sit-down restaurant.
“We had an opportunity to relocate to Florida and open our first sit-down restaurant,” Belson said.
“We jumped at the chance. Within six weeks we were here.”
Their move to Florida allowed them to take over the location of the former Jagerstuble restaurant in Largo, providing a space that already had connections to European cuisine.
A chef inspired by family traditions
The restaurant’s namesake, Monika, grew up in Budapest, Hungary, where she learned baking and cooking from family members.
She later moved to the United States and worked as the head baker and chef at Café M in New York City, where she continued refining her culinary skills.
Her recipes reflect the cooking traditions of her family and the flavors she grew up with in Hungary.
After meeting Chad, the couple combined their shared European heritage and passion for food to build their restaurant concept.
A place for nostalgia and comfort
The owners say their ultimate goal is to offer more than just a meal.
They want guests to experience the emotional connection many people feel when tasting dishes that remind them of childhood or family gatherings.
“When people take that first bite, sometimes the reaction is, ‘Oh my God, this is just love in a bowl,’” Belson said.
“Sometimes they get teary-eyed and say, ‘This is Grandma.’”
The couple hopes their cooking helps people reconnect with their roots or discover traditional European flavors for the first time.
