NORRISTOWN, PA – A dangerous electrical fire broke out in Norristown on Wednesday afternoon, leaving two dozen residents without homes and multiple buildings severely damaged.
The Cause of the Blaze
The incident occurred shortly after noon on May 13 along the 900 block of West Airy Street. According to the Norristown Fire Chief, the fire was triggered when a tree fell onto power lines in a rear alley behind two homes.
The fallen lines created a hazardous electrical fire that firefighters could not immediately extinguish. Crews had to wait for PECO technicians to arrive and de-energize the lines before they could safely put out the flames.
Residents Displaced
Officials have confirmed that at least 24 people have been displaced due to the fire and subsequent power outages. Two homes on the block have been officially marked as unlivable.
Neighbors in the surrounding area are currently waiting for PECO to fully restore power to the street.
Emergency Shelter Information
The American Red Cross has stepped in to assist the impacted families. A reception center was established and has since been converted into an overnight shelter.
