NEWARK, NJ – The intense taste of summer continues across the region as Newark officially logs its first multi-day heat wave of the year, with temperatures expected to hit the mid-90s once again on Wednesday.
Record-Breaking Heat Wave
Newark residents have experienced a sudden surge in temperatures well ahead of the official start of summer. The city recorded a blistering 97 degrees on Tuesday, which followed 90 degrees on Monday and 91 degrees on Sunday.
While Wednesday’s temperatures may dip slightly compared to Tuesday’s peak, an increase in humidity will keep the heat index feeling just as oppressive.
Heat Advisory In Effect
A Heat Advisory remains in place for parts of the tri-state area through Wednesday evening. Weather officials warn that extreme heat this early in the season can be a severe shock to the human body, as residents are not yet acclimated to mid-summer conditions.
Local health officials are advising anyone planning to be outdoors for extended periods to:
- Keep physical activity levels to a minimum.
- Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
- Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces or shade.
Chilly Holiday Weekend Ahead
The intense heat will fortunately be short-lived. A shifting weather pattern is expected to bring severe storms later in the week, which will usher in a significantly wetter and much cooler Memorial Day weekend.
