'His Trachea Was Exposed' Portland Man Survives Brutal Throat-Slashing Near Local Denny’s

PORTLAND, OR — A 33-year-old man is lucky to be alive today after a horrific attack near a Portland Denny’s left him with a slit throat and a fight for his life.

The incident, which occurred on April 19, has resulted in the arrest of Christopher James Parkins, 39, who now faces several felony charges, including attempted first-degree murder. According to court records, the victim, Christopher Thomas, survived only because of the swift intervention of a bystander and restaurant employees.

A Gruesome Scene and a Miraculous Escape

The attack reportedly took place in a parking lot near the Denny’s restaurant. According to a preventive detention affidavit, a witness saw a “commotion” and watched as Thomas stumbled back, clutching a severe wound to his neck.

Despite the gravity of his injury—which was so deep that authorities noted his trachea was exposed—Thomas managed to run toward the Denny’s. The witness helped him get inside the restaurant, where employees immediately jumped into action to stem the bleeding.

“If it would have been any longer, he would have bled to death,” the victim’s mother, Deborah, told local news outlets. “I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart… they saved his life.”

Suspect Blames “Blurred Reality” and Meth Use

Portland authorities located the suspect, Christopher James Parkins, shortly after the attack. Officers reportedly found him carrying a 3-to-4-inch fixed-blade knife partially concealed by his sleeve.

During police questioning, the details of Parkins’ state of mind became a focal point. According to the affidavit:

  • Parkins admitted to being awake for several days.
  • He confessed to smoking methamphetamine and drinking heavily.
  • He told officers he had recently lost his housing and was living on the streets.

When asked about the slashing, Parkins allegedly told police, “Everything feels like it’s not even real.” He claimed he did not remember fighting or cutting anyone but admitted to running when he heard sirens.

The Legal Battle Begins

Parkins appeared in court where he pleaded not guilty to a string of charges:

  • One count of attempted murder.
  • One count of first-degree assault.
  • Two counts of second-degree assault.
  • Unlawful use of a weapon.

He is currently being held without bond at the Multnomah County Detention Center. A preventive detention hearing is scheduled for May 4.

Community in Shock

The victim, who was also unhoused at the time of the incident, underwent emergency surgery and is currently in the long process of recovery. The incident has reignited local conversations regarding safety, the drug crisis, and homelessness in the Portland area.
