Hollywood Homeowner Hit With $1,600 'Catch-Up' Water Bill

HOLLYWOOD, FL – A Hollywood resident is facing a massive financial shock after the city updated his water meter and issued a retroactive bill for nearly $1,600 to cover previously estimated charges.

The Surprise Bill

Local resident James Wilson received the unexpected $1,575 water bill following a routine meter installation. When Wilson contacted the City of Hollywood, officials informed him that they were retroactively charging him for unbilled water usage dating all the way back to April 2022.

City officials explained that Wilson’s previous meter had failed to transmit usage data wirelessly, though it continued to record it internally. During that period, the city billed him based on estimated usage. Once technicians pulled the actual stored data from the old meter, they recalculated the account, resulting in the massive catch-up balance.

“No Free Water”

Wilson has refused to pay the bill while the city reviews his account, arguing that the municipality should forgive the charges due to their equipment failure and let him pay accurate readings moving forward.

However, City of Hollywood spokesperson Joanne Hussey stated firmly that “there is no free water,” signaling that the city expects residents to pay for what they consume, regardless of technical glitches.

How To Check Your Bill

This incident highlights a major risk for local homeowners. To prevent surprise four-figure bills, Hollywood utility customers are urged to check the billing codes on their monthly statements:

  • Code “A”: Reflects an Actual reading.
  • Code “E”: Reflects an Estimated charge.

If you notice an “E” on your bill for multiple consecutive months, you should contact the utility department immediately before a large balance accumulates.
