Kentucky Father Convicted After Telling Daughter He Killed Her Mother Because He Was ‘Tired of Looking at Her’

JACKSON, KY — A Kentucky jury has found 49-year-old Fairley Napier guilty of a series of grisly crimes, including the murder and dismemberment of his former common-law wife, following a trial that revealed a motive rooted in jealousy and a chilling confession made to his own child.

On April 1, after days of harrowing testimony, the jury convicted Napier of murder, abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, and criminal mischief. The charges stem from the January 2024 death of 45-year-old Joanie Campbell-Smith.

A Brutal Crime Concealed in Flame

The investigation began on January 4, 2024, when Campbell-Smith was reported missing. Two days later, authorities discovered her charred remains inside a burned vehicle on property belonging to Napier.

Prosecutors painted a graphic picture of the victim’s final moments. Commonwealth’s Attorney General Miranda King told the court that Napier shot Campbell-Smith in a parking lot after they met at a local Jiffy Mart. According to investigators, Napier then used a mattock—a heavy tool typically used for digging—to break into the vehicle after the doors locked.

The details only grew darker:

  • Mutilation: Evidence showed Napier used the mattock to dismember and mutilate Campbell-Smith’s body inside the car.
  • Evidence Tampering: Napier then set the vehicle on fire to hide the crime.
  • Scene Evidence: Investigators testified to finding body tissue scattered across the scene, including on logging equipment owned by Napier.

A Chilling Confession

While Napier initially claimed he last saw Campbell-Smith alive at the Jiffy Mart, his own daughter’s testimony proved pivotal. She told Kentucky State Police that her father eventually admitted to the killing.

In a phone call that shocked the community, Napier reportedly confessed to burning the body, telling his daughter he killed her mother because “he had gotten tired of seeing her lying in the log yard and looking at her.”

Motive: Jealousy Over a Secret Marriage

Though Napier was in a new relationship, prosecutors argued he was consumed by jealousy. Campbell-Smith had recently remarried, a fact she and her new husband tried to keep secret to avoid Napier’s known temper.

The court heard that Napier’s current girlfriend had shown him photos of the victim with her new husband shortly before the murder. In the days following the disappearance, Napier allegedly cycled through four different vehicles and purchased a “burner” phone to evade detection.

Sentence Recommendation

Despite being offered a plea deal in February, Napier chose to take the case to trial. The jury has recommended concurrent sentences totaling 45 years in prison.

Napier is currently being held as he awaits his formal sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for May 8.
