BROOKLYN, NY – A major emergency response unfolded in Fort Greene Sunday evening after a three-wheeled motorcycle plowed into a crowd of pedestrians inside Commodore Barry Park, injuring nine people.
Chaos Inside Commodore Barry Park
According to the New York City Police Department, the incident occurred just before 7:00 p.m. when a 53-year-old woman operating a three-wheeler entered the park. The vehicle suddenly struck a gathering of parkgoers.
Witnesses described a scene of immediate panic. “Everybody that was sitting here went up in the air,” park attendee Kim Tammy told reporters at the scene.
Multiple Victims Hospitalized
First responders rushed to the park to treat the injured. Out of the nine victims:
- Four individuals remain in critical condition at local area hospitals.
- Five individuals are listed in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver was also transported to the hospital and is currently listed in stable condition. Police confirmed she is now in custody, and formal charges are pending.
Investigation Into Vehicle Control
While the driver faces impending charges, community members who know her suggest the crash was a tragic accident rather than an intentional act. Several witnesses noted that she likely lost control of the heavy three-wheeled bike.
Authorities are actively investigating whether the operator was under the influence at the time of the crash or if a lack of experience with the specific vehicle played a role in the collision.
