Chicago, Illinois – A dangerous weather setup is unfolding across northern Illinois today, bringing the risk of tornadoes, damaging winds, and sudden travel hazards just as the evening commute begins.
The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a Wind Advisory in effect until 7 p.m. for northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana. Strong southwest winds are expected to intensify through the afternoon, with gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph. These conditions may make driving especially risky for trucks, buses, and other high-profile vehicles, while also increasing the chances of isolated power outages.
As the day progresses, the situation is expected to escalate. Multiple rounds of thunderstorms are forecast to develop between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., with the most severe activity targeting areas west of Interstate 39. Cities like Rockford, DeKalb, and Ottawa are at the highest risk for tornado formation, along with damaging wind gusts that could reach up to 70 mph and hail around one inch in size.
In Chicago, Joliet, and nearby suburbs, storms are likely to arrive later in the evening, coinciding with peak travel hours. Drivers should be prepared for sudden drops in visibility, heavy rain, and localized street flooding that could quickly impact road conditions.
Emergency officials are urging residents to act early. Securing outdoor furniture, avoiding unnecessary travel during peak storm hours, and keeping multiple alert systems active could make a critical difference. Storms are expected to move quickly, tracking northeast at speeds of up to 55 mph, leaving little time to react once warnings are issued.
While the most intense threat should begin to ease later tonight, unsettled weather will continue. Additional rounds of storms are expected into Saturday morning, followed by cooler and breezy conditions through the weekend.
Here’s how the next few days are shaping up across Chicago:
Today: Severe storms and strong winds, high 67–74, low 40–58
Friday: Chance of evening storms, high 51–76, low 39–57
Saturday: Morning showers with breezy conditions, high 56–65, low 32–36
Sunday: Partly cloudy and breezy, high 48–52, low 33–37

Residents are advised to stay weather-aware throughout the day, as conditions may change rapidly with little warning.
