Open Hand Atlanta Calls for Volunteers as Demand for Meal Deliveries Grows Across Georgia

A nonprofit organization serving some of Georgia’s most vulnerable residents is urgently seeking volunteers as demand for its meal delivery services continues to rise.

Open Hand Atlanta provides freshly prepared, nutritionally balanced meals to seniors and individuals living with chronic or serious health conditions across the state. As food insecurity increases and economic pressures mount, the organization says it needs at least 100 volunteers every day to keep up with growing demand.

Meeting a Growing Need for Nutritious Meals

Open Hand Atlanta currently prepares and delivers nearly 5,000 meals daily. Volunteers play a critical role at every stage of the process, from assembling meals in the kitchen to delivering them directly to clients’ homes.

Many of the people served are unable to shop or cook for themselves due to health limitations. According to the organization, clients often include individuals battling cancer, HIV, heart disease, renal failure, or other serious medical conditions. A majority of them live below the poverty line.

“These are incredibly challenging times,” said CEO Matt Pieper. “Food prices are higher than ever, and funding streams are being reduced or threatened. Our client service phone lines are ringing constantly with new requests for help.”

Volunteers Describe a Positive, Purpose-Driven Experience

For volunteers like Michelle Wilkins, helping out has been both meaningful and uplifting. Wilkins has spent the past three weeks assisting with meal preparation for clients who depend on the service.

“You come in here, the music is loud, people are smiling, and everyone is in a good mood,” Wilkins said. “You’re doing something that truly helps others, not just yourself.”

She noted that the meals are carefully portioned and tailored to meet specific dietary needs, something many clients would not otherwise have access to. “We take three meals a day for granted. For many of these people, this food is essential.”

Service Area Continues to Expand

Open Hand Atlanta’s reach extends well beyond the metro area. The organization delivers meals throughout Atlanta and surrounding communities, including Gainesville and Macon. As the service area expands, so does the need for consistent volunteer support.

Pieper emphasized that volunteers are the backbone of the operation. Without enough hands in the kitchen and on delivery routes, it becomes difficult to meet the nutritional needs of thousands of clients who rely on the program.

How to Get Involved

The organization encourages individuals, families, and groups to consider volunteering. No long-term commitment is required, and roles are available for a variety of schedules and abilities.

“It’s contagious,” Wilkins said. “The positive energy, the sense of purpose. I’d tell anyone thinking about it to come down and join us.”
