BROOKSVILLE, FL — Detectives in Florida are searching for answers after a mysterious donation turned up at a local thrift store. What was likely thought to be a plastic Halloween novelty or a theatrical prop has officially been confirmed to be a real human skull.
Remarkably, this is the second time in recent years that a genuine human cranium has been discovered sitting on a second-hand store shelf in the Sunshine State.
The Drop-Off at Jericho Ministries
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office announced that the skeletal remains were donated to the Jericho Ministries Thrift Store in Brooksville, located roughly 40 miles north of Tampa.
According to surveillance and donation logs, the skull was left at the facility on May 16, 2026, between 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM.
It was mixed in with a larger box of standard household donations. Authorities believe the donor had no malicious intent and genuinely did not realize the item was biological human remains.
Detectives are currently appealing to the public for help in identifying the individual or individuals who dropped off the box so they can trace the origin of the skull.
A Bizarre Case of Deja Vu
This isn’t Florida’s first encounter with second-hand skeletal remains. In November 2023, a similarly shocking discovery went viral in Fort Myers, Florida.
In that instance, an anthropologist named Michelle Calhoun was browsing the Halloween decoration section of a local thrift store when she spotted a skull that looked far too anatomically correct.
She alerted the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and extensive testing later confirmed it was a real human skull, estimated to be roughly 75 years old.
That 2023 case was ultimately deemed non-suspicious. The store owner revealed the skull had been recovered from an abandoned storage unit purchased years prior.
A store employee, thinking it was a unique prop, placed it in the Halloween section with a defensive price tag of $4,000 to ensure no one would actually buy it.

The Legal Reality of Human Bones
While finding a skull in a thrift store makes for an eccentric headline, it triggers immediate legal and forensic protocols. In the state of Florida, it is strictly illegal to knowingly buy, sell, or trade any human organs, tissue, or bones for valuable consideration.
Whenever human remains are uncovered outside of a cemetery or medical facility, law enforcement must treat the site as a potential crime scene until a forensic pathologist or medical examiner can rule out foul play, determine the age of the bone, and check for signs of trauma.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is urging the person who dropped off the items—or anyone who recognizes the donation timeline—to contact their criminal investigations division immediately to help close the case.
