SIMI VALLEY, CA – A 34-year-old local man faces premeditated attempted murder charges following a shocking daytime attack inside a busy Simi Valley Target store—just hours after being released from custody.
The Target Attack
The violent incident unfolded on Wednesday, June 17, at the Target location in Simi Valley. Authorities state that Rejean Morgan Tabor of Simi Valley allegedly began strangling a female shopper inside the retail store.
The attack sparked chaos as multiple shoppers rushed in to intervene and save the woman. The victim, who police confirmed did not know Tabor, was hospitalized and is currently listed in stable condition. Several other shoppers sustained minor injuries during the struggle.
Released Hours Before Rampage
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office revealed a startling timeline on Monday: Tabor had been released from custody on mandatory supervision less than 24 hours before the Target attack. He had just completed sentences for two separate criminal cases in Ventura County.
Along with the felony attempted murder count, prosecutors have hit Tabor with multiple charges related to the courtroom escalation, including:
- Two misdemeanor counts of battery
- One misdemeanor count of assault
- One misdemeanor count of child abuse (for injuring a minor during the incident)
Court Proceedings Suspended
Tabor made his initial court appearance on Monday, June 22. However, he did not enter a plea. His defense attorney officially declared a doubt regarding Tabor’s mental competency to stand trial.
As a result, criminal proceedings have been temporarily suspended pending a formal psychological evaluation. Tabor remains held at the Ventura County Jail with bail set at $750,000. A competency hearing has been officially scheduled for July 16.
