MECHANICVILLE, NY – Authorities believe a 64-year-old woman was responsible for the deaths of her daughter, four grandchildren, and herself inside an upstate New York apartment.
The Discovery
The tragic scene was uncovered on the evening of Tuesday, June 23, after a neighbor requested a welfare check at an apartment complex in Mechanicville, located about 20 miles north of Albany. The neighbor grew concerned after not seeing the resident for several days.
Mechanicville Police Chief William Rabbitt confirmed that officers obtained access through building management and discovered six deceased individuals inside. Due to the condition of the remains, officials believe the family had been dead for an “extended period of time.”
Victims Identified
Following autopsies at Albany Medical Center, authorities identified the deceased as:
- Amy Steadman, 64 (Grandmother)
- Sarah Myers, 44 (Daughter)
- Harper Harmon, 13; Hudson Harmon, 11; Gavin Harmon, 10; and Gracelynn Harmon, 10 (Grandchildren)
Investigators revealed that while Sarah Myers and her children lived in a separate unit within the same complex, the incident occurred entirely inside Steadman’s apartment. The children were homeschooled, and their father, who resides in Utah, has been notified.
Investigation and Evidence
Police Chief Rabbitt stated that evidence “strongly suggests” a murder-suicide orchestrated by Steadman. There is currently no indication that anyone outside the family was involved.
Key details from the ongoing investigation include:
- Physical Evidence: A handwritten note and other circumstantial evidence were recovered from the scene.
- Autopsy Findings: Preliminary reports indicate one child suffered fatal sharp-force injuries.
- Suspected Poisoning: Multiple prescription and over-the-counter medication bottles were found, indicating potential intentional poisoning.
Community Impact
The official causes and manners of death remain pending until final toxicology results are completed. Chief Rabbitt emphasized that there is no remaining threat to the public.
“Mechanicville is a close-knit city,” Rabbitt said, acknowledging the deep impact on the community of 5,000 residents. The Mechanicville Police Department is continuing its investigation in coordination with the New York State Police. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact local authorities.
