Jacksonville, Florida — A suspected drunk driver is facing a long list of criminal charges after authorities say he drove through an active IRONMAN race course, putting thousands of athletes and spectators at risk before leading police on a dramatic chase through Jacksonville.
The incident unfolded on May 16 during the inaugural IRONMAN Jacksonville event, where competitors were taking part in one of the world’s most demanding endurance races.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, 62-year-old Darrell Simon allegedly bypassed race barriers and entered restricted portions of the course while athletes were actively competing.
Officials said spectators quickly reported the dangerous situation as Simon’s white Ford Focus traveled through sections designated for runners and cyclists.
Athletes Forced to React as Vehicle Entered Race Route
Authorities said Simon drove through areas that had been closed to normal traffic, creating a serious threat to participants and spectators lining the course.
Officer Ernesto Valerio, who was assigned to traffic control during the event, immediately responded after learning a vehicle had entered the restricted race area.
Dashcam footage later released by the sheriff’s office showed Valerio rushing through nearby streets in an effort to intercept the suspect.
Despite emergency lights and sirens, investigators said Simon refused to stop.
During the pursuit, police claim the suspect continued driving through portions of the race route and nearly struck a cyclist, forcing the athlete to quickly move out of the way.
Officers Fear Potential Tragedy
As the chase intensified, another officer attempted to stop Simon by positioning a police motorcycle in front of the vehicle.
However, authorities said the suspect drove over a berm and maneuvered around the blockade, continuing his escape.
Police believed the situation was becoming increasingly dangerous as Simon made his way toward active roadways.
At one point during the pursuit, Officer Valerio could be heard expressing concern about the threat posed by the fleeing driver.
“That’s it, I’m going to stop this guy, he’s going to kill someone.”
Moments later, officers took action to bring the chase to an end.
Dramatic End to Chase Captured on Video
According to investigators, Simon eventually crashed into a stopped vehicle while attempting a turn.
Valerio’s patrol vehicle also collided with the suspect’s car during the effort to stop him.
The officer then executed a PIT maneuver, causing the vehicle to spin out and come to a stop.
Video footage shows multiple officers quickly surrounding the car and ordering the driver out before taking him into custody.
Despite the dangerous circumstances, authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported among athletes, spectators, officers, or motorists involved in the incident.
Suspect Faces Multiple Charges
Following his arrest, Simon was booked on a series of felony and misdemeanor charges.
Authorities said he faces eight felony charges, including alleged aggravated fleeing, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, aggravated battery on an officer, and operating a vehicle while his driver’s license was revoked.
In addition, he was cited for numerous misdemeanor offenses and traffic violations.
Officials also noted that this marks the third DUI-related arrest involving Simon within the past decade.
He is currently being held at Jacksonville’s pre-trial detention facility on a bond set at $215,042.
Court records indicate his next scheduled court appearance is on June 16.
Sheriff’s Office Praises Officers’ Actions
Following the incident, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office commended the officers involved for acting quickly to protect race participants and members of the public.
In a statement, the agency emphasized that the officers’ response may have prevented a much more serious outcome.
“We are incredibly proud of our officers for putting their lives on the line in this moment to protect the Ironman athletes and spectators from what could have been a tragedy.”
The case has drawn significant attention as video of the chase continues to circulate, highlighting the risks officers faced while attempting to stop a driver they believed posed an immediate danger to hundreds of people gathered for the major sporting event.
