WHITE COUNTY, Ind. — A truck driver lost his life in a devastating single-vehicle crash late Tuesday night along Interstate 65 in northwestern Indiana. The crash resulted in a rollover and vehicle fire, leaving the driver trapped inside.
Authorities with the Indiana State Police responded to the scene shortly after 10 p.m. on February 10. The incident occurred on southbound I-65 near the 193-mile marker, close to the U.S. 231 exit just south of Wolcott in White County.
Crash Happened Near U.S. 231 Exit
According to a preliminary investigation by the Indiana State Police, the driver was operating a yellow 2006 GMC 3500 Savana box truck traveling southbound on Interstate 65 when the vehicle suddenly left the roadway for reasons that remain under investigation.
Investigators believe the truck entered the median before the driver attempted to correct the vehicle’s path. During this maneuver, the driver reportedly overcorrected, causing the truck to lose stability and roll over onto its side. The vehicle then crossed both southbound lanes of traffic.
The truck eventually came to rest on the right shoulder of the highway.
Vehicle Caught Fire, Driver Trapped
Following the rollover, the box truck caught fire. Authorities stated that the driver became trapped inside the vehicle as flames spread. Emergency crews responded quickly, but the intensity of the situation made rescue efforts extremely difficult.
A passerby described as a “good Samaritan” reportedly witnessed the crash and immediately stopped to assist. According to police, the individual attempted to render aid to the trapped driver. However, due to the fire and hazardous conditions, they were unable to reach him safely.
First responders worked to extinguish the flames and secure the crash scene.
Driver Pronounced Dead at Scene
The White County Coroner’s Office pronounced the driver dead at the scene. Officials confirmed that next-of-kin notification has been completed.
At this time, the identity of the driver has not been publicly released pending formal procedures by the coroner’s office.
Ongoing Investigation
Indiana State Police continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash. It remains unclear what caused the truck to leave the roadway initially. Investigators are expected to review factors such as road conditions, vehicle condition, and possible driver-related causes.
Traffic in the area was impacted for several hours as crews cleared the wreckage and ensured the roadway was safe for travel. Southbound lanes were temporarily restricted while emergency personnel managed the scene.
Authorities remind drivers to exercise caution while traveling on highways, particularly at night when visibility may be reduced. Investigations into fatal crashes typically take time as officials carefully analyze all available evidence.
Further updates will be released as more information becomes available.
