Uber Driver Arrested After Nine-Hour Hostage Standoff In Beverly Hills

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – An armed rideshare driver wanted for the attempted murder of a law enforcement officer was taken into custody early Monday morning following a grueling nine-hour hostage standoff in Beverly Hills.

The Pursuit and Crash

The incident began around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, when Beverly Hills Police received an automated alert for a felony vehicle. Officers located a gray Ford pickup truck near San Vicente and Beverly boulevards and attempted a traffic stop.

The driver, identified as Osvaldo Del Rio, refused to pull over, leading to a short pursuit. The chase ended when Del Rio crashed his truck into an SUV near Burton Way and Robertson Boulevard, where he immediately barricaded himself inside.

Hostage Situation and Standoff

Authorities discovered Del Rio was holding a passenger—an innocent woman he was driving to work—hostage. For nine hours, tactical teams surrounded the vehicle, which Del Rio had obscured using a front sunshade and dark window tints.

The hostage was safely rescued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Special Enforcement Bureau just before 11 p.m. Del Rio was eventually taken into custody around midnight after a K9 deployment and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Criminal History and Arrest Details

Del Rio was already wanted for an incident earlier that Sunday at 3 a.m. During a traffic stop in South Los Angeles, he reportedly struggled with deputies and dragged one with his vehicle while fleeing.

A subsequent search of Del Rio’s property on Monday revealed:

  • Numerous firearms
  • Tactical accessories
  • Multiple weapons

Uber’s Response

Uber has confirmed that Del Rio has been permanently removed from their platform. In a statement, the company expressed relief that the passenger was not physically harmed and pledged full cooperation with law enforcement.

Osvaldo Del Rio is currently being held on $1,000,000 bail for attempted murder, along with additional charges filed in Beverly Hills.
