Franklin Park, Illinois — Federal health officials have issued a public health alert after beef products served at multiple restaurant locations across three states were linked to a possible E. coli contamination outbreak.
The warning involves beef kofta products served at The Kebab Shop restaurants in California, Texas and Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
USDA Issues Public Health Alert
The USDA announced that the beef kofta products were originally produced as a raw ground beef item by Olympia Food Industries, Inc., doing business as Olympia Foods, in Franklin Park, Illinois.
According to federal officials, the products were produced on January 6, 2026, before being distributed to various restaurant locations operated by The Kebab Shop.
Authorities say the possible contamination was discovered during an ongoing investigation into an outbreak of illnesses potentially connected to the beef products.
As concerns grew, The Kebab Shop reportedly removed the beef kofta item from menus at all locations.
FSIS confirmed that the company stopped selling beef kofta on May 18, 2026.
Nine Illnesses Reported in California
Health officials say the investigation is being carried out jointly by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
So far, nine people in California have reportedly become ill during the outbreak investigation.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether all of the illnesses are directly tied to the same strain of E. coli, but testing remains ongoing.
