A 1-year-old boy has died after falling from an apartment building Friday afternoon in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood, authorities confirmed.

According to police, the child fell from the fourth floor of an apartment building in the 5800 block of North Sheridan Road on the city’s North Side. Emergency responders arrived shortly after the incident was reported and found the boy suffering from a serious head injury.

The child was rushed to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston in critical condition. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The medical examiner identified the child as Mukhsin Mirzoashra Fov, 1.

Chicago police said Area 3 detectives are investigating the circumstances that led to the fall. Authorities have not released details about how the child accessed the window or balcony, or whether safety barriers were in place at the time.
