Taylor, Michigan – An 11-year-old boy tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday evening while walking to a nearby store to buy snacks. The devastating incident has left a Michigan community grieving and a family mourning the sudden loss of a young life.
According to the Taylor Police Department, officers responded to an emergency call at approximately 6:37 p.m. on February 10 regarding a child hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Pond Village Drive and Eureka Road. When officers arrived at the scene, they immediately began life-saving efforts before the child was transported to a local hospital. Despite those efforts, the boy later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities confirmed that alcohol and narcotics are not currently believed to be factors in the crash. The driver involved remained at the scene and is cooperating fully with investigators. Police stated that the accident remains under active investigation.
The child was later identified by his family as Jacob Robinson, a sixth-grade student. His mother, Tonoya Robinson, shared heartbreaking details about the moments leading up to the tragedy. She said Jacob had left their home on foot to purchase snacks from a nearby store.
“I talked to him. I said, ‘Jacob, you’ve got to hurry home before it gets dark,’” she recalled. When he did not return, she repeatedly tried calling him but was unable to reach him. Her concern quickly turned into fear when she heard ambulance sirens in the area.
“I just knew something was wrong,” she said.
According to statements shared by the family, Jacob was not in a crosswalk at the time he was struck. Investigators are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the collision to determine exactly how the crash occurred.
Ecorse Public Schools confirmed Jacob’s passing in a statement released the following day. School officials expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the sixth-grade student and extended condolences to his family. The district also noted that Jacob had siblings attending other schools within the system.
To support students and staff during this difficult time, grief counseling services are being made available at Grandport School and throughout the district in the coming days. School leaders encouraged the community to keep Jacob’s family, classmates, and teachers in their thoughts.
The tragedy has deeply affected neighbors and residents in Taylor, many of whom expressed shock that such a heartbreaking event occurred in their community. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of roadway safety, especially as daylight hours shorten during the winter months.
A fundraising campaign has been established to help Jacob’s family cover funeral expenses and related costs as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
As investigators continue working to piece together the events of that evening, the focus remains on honoring Jacob’s memory and supporting those who loved him most.
