RANCHO CORDOVA, CALIFORNIA — A 14-year-old boy was arrested after allegedly leading officers on a high-speed e-bike pursuit through a neighborhood and onto the American River bike trail, according to police.
The Rancho Cordova Police Department confirmed the teen was taken into custody and booked into juvenile hall on a felony evading charge.
E-Bike Rider Allegedly Ran Stop Sign
According to police, patrol officers were traveling through a local Rancho Cordova neighborhood when they observed a person riding an e-bike fail to stop at a stop sign.
Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the rider allegedly fled, initiating a pursuit.
Police said the rider reached speeds of up to 55 mph while traveling through public roadways.
Pursuit Toward American River Bike Trail
Authorities reported that during the pursuit, the rider violated multiple traffic laws while heading toward the American River bike trail.
Upon entering the trail area, the rider slowed to approximately 35 mph.
County Park Rangers were alerted and responded to assist.
Teen Surrenders Without Incident
Park Rangers approached the rider, who was identified as a 14-year-old boy.
Police said the teen surrendered without incident.
He was subsequently booked into juvenile hall on a charge of felony evading. The e-bike involved in the pursuit was towed.
Parents Cited for Allowing Unlicensed Operation
In addition to the teen’s arrest, officers issued a citation to his parents for allegedly allowing an unlicensed minor to operate the e-bike.
Police emphasized that improper operation of e-bikes on public roadways can pose serious safety risks.
